  • 5 speed standard tranny oil change 91GL FF

This is a 91GL Festiva, front wheel drive, 5 speed standard tranny. After a CV problem cropped up I did an axle change (passenger side). Seemed like an appropriate time to change the transmission oil also, so I did, I went to Royal Purple, and all seems well. I had not changed the tranny oil before so I had a few questions and the forum answered most of them. I’m a man who likes pictures so here is what I wished I could have had to read before I began the process. They say the best gift is the one you would like. So this is what I would have liked.
    First a brief description:
To drain the tranny you need to squeeze underneath the car and remove the plug in the bottom of the transmission. Easy to find just where it should be. No snap shot required here. Lol
Now that you have the primal mechanical ooz draining into the SS Bowl that you borrowed from the kitchen years ago, and of course she refused to take back, no matter how well you cleaned it, we can move on.
Next remove the 10mm lock bolt next to the speedometer cable connector.
Now remove the cable connector and gear assembly.
Yikes.......... look it a fill hole.

The speedometer fill thing was not to clear to me, so I took some pictures after I noodled it out.

    First step:
Remove the speedometer cable from the tranny.

    Second step:
    Remove the 10mm bolt

Now here this is the more tricky part. Now you must turn the (speedometer cable connector/ fill hole plug) back and forth while lifting up on it. Back and forth and up at the same time. There is a rubber O-ring seal on it. As soon as it pops free of the case (less than 5mm) it slides on up and out easily.

Once it’s out it looks like this.

Notice the black rubber O-ring near the top to seal it. The gear at the bottom must turn a little when removing and also when re-installing.

    The illusive Fill Hole:
Here is what the fill hole looks like on the 91GL:

    Holds 2.6 qt.
I took a good guess at 2.5 and could see the oil down in the fill hole so good enough.
Hope this helps those who follow after me.

OK, something we've needed for a while!
Just need to get a pic of the level indicator and I'd recommend this for a sticky or an article.

I clean the speedo housing good and paint the embossed lines on it black. It makes it easier to read the level on it.

        mhstark,
Was it easy to rotate the speedo/fill fitting once the 10mm bolt was removed? Did a lot of junk fall into the tranny? If so, would you suggest removing the fitting B4 draining? Nice photo job. Thanks

          Charlie,
Not to easy to turn back and forth with your fingers but doable. I did clean it off with compressed air before opening. There is a dirt catching crease along the side. I would air it off before I started opening it up as a good practice for sure.

I'm adding my kudos on the write up too! Great info.

What I usually do (from under the car) is back the 10mm bolt out and then take a long flat head screw driver and tap on the edge of the flange that sticks out. Give a couple of taps straight up and out it pops.

You guys feel free to correct me if I'm wrong in doing it this way. I'm still a rookie at all of this. LOL It's just much easier for me than pulling it from the top side.

Just be careful when you do it this way Laura. Sometimes the flanges break off. I had one break off on me and another tranny at the salvage yard had the same issue. I usually use a pair of channel locks and grab as close as I can to the gear unit and wiggle gently back and forth. When I put the speedo gear back in, I put a really good coat of tranny fluid around shaft where it makes contact with the tranny. I move it back and forth again to make sure it's lubed well.

Oh man, that wouldn't be good! I haven't had to really hammer it. Just tapped it really, but I don't want to risk breaking it, to be sure. Thanks for bringing that up. I appreciate all the insight I can get!

Right GOOD idea..... wish I'd thought of that. Instead I was on top like a monkey on a football trying to pull it out.
                          Good tip

LOL! Just be sure that you read what Wrestler wrote about the flange breaking off. That would mess up your day worse than looking like a monkey on a football.

I had my good eye on that msg. The words [gentle force and finesse] seem to apply.
