  • Hub centric rings

I need some hub centric rings for my new wheels. My local wheel shop said they arn't available for steel wheels...is this true? I looked at some and dont see why they wouldnt work.

Steel wheels don't have a perfectly centered hub like alloys, so a ring wouldn't center it properly. You don't need one, just shake the wheel as you're tightening the lugs and they'll center.

not true. Many manufacturers employ a hub pilot on steel wheels. Case in point; the Festiva.

Convert it to studs and don't worry about it.

The steel wheels we use are lug-centric. The wheel is not supported by the center hole. We have never had a problem using these and we use them for racing where they take a lot harder beating than a street car. You must take care when installing them. Don't just throw them on and tighten the first nut completely tight. We also always use a torque wrench to tighten them and recheck often.
              You gonna race that thing?

That doesn't center it, it just keeps it from falling off while you're putting in the bolts. Grab some feeler gauges and measure it with it mounted.

All wheels are lug centric. Think about it, if they lugs weren't in a perfect circle the wheels would have to be matched to the hub and never rotated. The lug face is conical/round/acorn so the wheel centers as you torque it down.

hmmm. mine are snug (all three cars), no room for feelers on the front hubs.

no, not all wheels are lug-centric. ever work on 97-03 F150/Expedition? They have washer-seat lugnuts. the hub is the pilot, and supports vehicle weight. So are the Super Duties. In fact, most of the vehicles I teach (med/heavy truck) are hub-centric.)

The wheels on two of our Festivas have rusted from the wheel to the hub, to the extent that it took a sledgehammer to beat them off after ALL the lugstuds were removed. No clearance for a feeler gauge of any kind. They were a tight fit. Really tight.
