  • Does a Festiva have a horn relay?

88 Carbed L model. Most of the time the horn works. But sometimes when there is more load on the electrical system (fan or headlights on) the horn doesn't work.

Is there a relay for the horn? And if so where is it? Can a relay from another car be used assuming I can't find a replacement?

    Thanks
    89 L

    Horn wiring

Yes. My 88 wiring diagram says it's "behind left side of I/P."

To help identify the relay, it shows GRN/WHT on the hot side of the relay switch and coil, with GRN/RED on the switch low side (leading to the horn element), and GRN/WHT on the coil GRN on the low side (leading to the horn switches on the steering wheel).

BTW, my 88LX has TWO horns, one below each headlight. Same color to each of them.

I have a 91 GL and the haynes doesn't have anything about where the horn relay is. As stated above, where is "behind left side of I/P"?

The L models have 1 horn on the pass. side, the LX and GL models have 2 horns, one on each side.

ok, so i just put on a new steering wheel and i need to hook up the horn. when you push the button on the horn and complete circuit, what is happening? is it going to ground? is it reading 12v? What is going on electrically when you push that button? I need to splice into the horn and i don't want to blow my horn relay or something.

The horn button just grounds the circuit.

Ok, i just hooked up my horn to my new mazda rx7 steering wheel. Yes, when the button is pressed it completes the circuit to ground. Took me a while to realize that the ground for the steering wheel is the splined shaft that the steering wheel connects to ... so, for anyone else who is thinking about doing a steering wheel mod, connect the spring loaded pointer (right beside the shaft) to the single wire that is in parallel with the button (on dual button wheel)... to check that the horn is working and the horn relay is OK, connect a jumper wire from the spring loaded pointer to the steering wheel shaft. This completes the circuit and the horn beeps. This afternoon, i had the steering wheel off the shaft (no ground) and my horn didn't work with the wires connected. Thought my horn/button wasn't hooked up and i wasted some time. Hope this helps someone else.

I'd also like to add that the fuse for the horn is labeled "stop". I didnt even consider pulling that one because of the name. haha. Just fyi.

To answer your other question, yes you can use a standard Bosch horn relay on the Festiva. Somebody told me what to buy and hook it up. I may still have the info somewhere in my file .

that's because the horn shares a fuse with the brake lights.
