Engine: B3 SOHC
Difficulty (1-10): 4
Time: 1.5 hours
Tools needed: 3/8 in. ratchet with an extension & 10, 12, 14 mm, and spark plug sockets
#2 Phillips screwdriver
Small pry bar or large flat screwdriver
Flashlight
Procedure:
1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. If equipped with manual transmission: set the parking brake, block the wheels, and place the vehicle in neutral. It is not necessary to jack up the vehicle because all work can be done from above.
3. Remove the spark plugs. Be sure to label the wires so that you know which wires go to which cylinder.
4. Remove the cover from the air filter. This required so that there is room to access the bolts for the timing cover a little easier.
5. Loosen the top and bottom bolts for the alternator. The top bolt is 12mm while the bottom is a 14mm.
6. Pivot the alternator toward the engine and remove the belt for the alternator.
7. Remove the water pump pulley. There are three 10mm bolts holding it on. To keep the pulley from spinning, wrap the belt around the pulley and hold the belt with one hand while you loosen the bolts with the other hand.
8. Remove the upper time belt cover. There are 4 10mm bolts holding this on.
9. There are two marks on the camshaft gear that are 90 degrees to each other. Find these and align one so that it is at the 12 o’clock position and the other is at the 3 o’clock position. There are marks on the head that these two marks should align with. To turn the camshaft, attach a socket to the camshaft and turn it clockwise.
10. Look at the crankshaft gear and look for a half-circle type groove. This should be directly under a circular pin that is sticking it out of the block. If you do not see the groove, turn the camshaft back and forth till the groove is aligned under the pin.
11. Loosen the timing belt adjuster by loosening (but not removing) the bolt that holds it on. The adjuster is on the side of the belt closest to the firewall. Push the adjuster away from the belt and re tighten the bolt.
12. Remove the belt from the camshaft but not from the crank.
13. Turn the camshaft till the marks are where they should be.
14. Place the belt back on the camshaft by first putting on the front side of the belt so that it is tight and then slide the rest of the belt back on.
15. Reverse procedure to put everything else back on and you are done. If the engine still runs rough you might be off one tooth, so go back and check to be sure everything is lined up correctly.
If there are any errors or corrections that need to be made let me know. There might be different steps if you have air conditioning or power steering, but it should not be much harder.
