  • Rough idle w/ AC on

When I'm at a stop sign or something and have the A\C on, the idle will drop from ~750 rpms to about 300, the engine stumbles and the valves chatter. The idle goes up to normal when I turn off the A/C. Is there an idle-up solenoid or something that's supposed to counteract this? If so, which one is it?

    Regards,

    Tim.

is yours carbed or efi, I don't remember. If its efi, the ecu needs to see the compressor switch come on to increase the iac duty cycle. If its carbed, you might be screwed. there was a "Do Not Install A/C" tsb on those in early 88. by mid 88, there was a change to ecu to increase the air bleed via the stepper motor (unit on top pass. side of carb w/ 4 hoses and a connector). I don't remember if the later carbed cars had a load solenoid.

        Mine's a 1989 L. I didn't see any warning sticker in the engine compartment.

I'll check on it more when I get home. I'm in Detroit for the week.

There are 2 connectors - a large one and a single terminal one - underneath the windshield wiper assembly that don't go to anything. I wonder if they went to a solenoid or something.

Well, the mechanic told me that adding a fan to the condensor would cure my idling woes. He explained it all to me, but I don't remember how it cured the problem.
