Ignition timing

How do you set the ignition timing? The Haynes guide is very vague about what to do.

for carbed cars......

get it to operating temp.

disconnect and plug vacuum lines to dist. (takes away vac adv/ret)

start eng, let idle with strobe clamp on #1 plug wire.

shoot at the timing mark.

factory base timing is 10 deg, but I found 8 deg works better (for carbed)
