  • Rack Support Bushing

I finally got around to installing my rebuilt rack & pinion. It is now installed. However, when the rack moves, the plastic rack support bushing pops out. I've tried hammering it back in but it just pops right back out. My FSM shows a slot on top of the rack's housing for a locking tab. I assume this is to secure the rack support bushing.

So my question is, can I use it without the rack support bushing or how could I secure the bushing? The ideas I have to secure the bushing are; 1) Try to wedge a shim-like piece between the outside of the bushing and the inside of the rack housing, 2) Use some sort of adhesive between the outside of the bushing and the inside of the rack housing, 3) Drill a hole through the rack housing and the bushing, then place a cotter pin or something inside of the drilled hole.

I have felt around and did not feel a slot, nor do I recall seeing one when the R&P was out of the car. Any input is welcomed!
