  • Power steering drive belt replacement on '91 Festy that also has AC.

I've got only one PS-equipped Festy, a '91 (+/-) GL, which also has AC. It's been parked among the weeds letting the smoker's odor dissipate since I purchased it, rust-free, for about $300 more than 5 years ago. I'm trying to put it back on the road, preferably as a member of the "transcontinental capable" division of my fleet. Toward that end, I plan to replace pretty much every rubber part since I hear all kinds of clunking sounds underneath when driving it, though none of it sounds like CV joint problems (but I'll install rebuilt drive shafts anyway).

Question: On a car with both PS anc AC, does the belt I see driving the PS also drive the AC just like the belt that drives the AC on a non-PS car? I can't really see down under the PS pump what's going on. I see what might be some sort of adjuster for the PS belt -- if both PS and AC are indeed driven by the same belt, perhaps that adjuster is all that's needed?

Note: I've heard that there were non-dealer PS and/or AC. I presume that mine are both factory, but have no way to verify that. Attached are some photos.

I did buy a PS belt (MasterPro "serpentine" p/n K049372/4K372/9/16"x38" OC/14mmx964mm OC) from Napa, and they did not ask me (1) if I had AC, which seems strange, nor (2) what was/wasn't factory. Also, the belt they sold me is NOT "V" shaped, rather flat. Certainly, our alternator belts are V-shaped, but I can't remember about the AC (w/o PS) belt, it having been a while since I replaced an AC belt.

Finally: What do I do to slacken up the PS belt? I know how to slacken an AC belt, but the PS pump seems to be mounted in the same place where the AC belt adjuster usually lives.
