Gearshift drop?

I am fighting a gearshift that drops 3 or 4 times every time I drive it(stick trans) and I am wondering if any one has come up with the reason it does drop out of the housing and if there is a good fix for this? My tollerance for shade tree fixes is pretty low.
The other thing is, on the end of the shifter allinment bar where it fits up on the trans is there supposed to be a rubber bushing? If so where could I find one??

Had the same shift drop problem with mine. There are different ways to handle it. I ended up buying a kit from Chris Rummel (on here). Can't remember what I paid for it. You have to drill a hole near the shifter housing, and bolt on a bracket from underneath. He includes a pretty good how-to sheet with it. Don't know if he still has any. I heard of guys who just jam something in there to hold it. Don't know about the bushing you are talking about. I'm sure others will chime in with how they've fixed theirs. I know others have had this problem.

I've done the nut and bolt method described above ^^ there is a rubber piece that holds it in place and it deteriorates over time.

would this be the same problem as I just had this morning...: I was sitting at a red light this morning and was tapping down on my shifter (to the music) and it dropped down ,I would say ,about and inch or so ?? What exactly happened ??Doesn't want to shift right unless I lift up on shifter.

Sure sounds like you have knocked it out of the socket. Grab the shift knob and give it a quick, and hard yank up. This usually will pop it back in the ball socket.
I have the part # of the bushings somewhere. I will take a look upstairs.

The shift rod bushings are Mazda PN B001-46-062. You will need 2 for each pivot point, and te are not rubber, but nylon.

I had that happen on an '82 Dodge Colt after a shady transmission shop did not tighten the gear shift linkages. I had not started doing my own repairs at the time. A local service station fixed it. I think it's a well-known problem with stick shifts.

It worked.I yanked it right back in to place.Now,how do I fix it correctly ??

Try Pming Rumnhammer, he was making brackets that fixed this at one time.

I had this happen on my '88 323 GT; the shifter would drop through the floor...Had to go to Mazda to buy a new shifter bracket/support (which had rusted out); kinda like a rod that goes from the tranny to the transmission tunnel and holds the shifter. Cost was like 140$CAN or so 9 years ago... I say that if it's in good enough shape and you're good at wrenchin', take it out and weld it back...
