  • shifter assembly

hi guys, i have a 1998 ford festiva, WF model i believe
the problem I'm having is the manual shifter assembly sloppy as hell once again, I've already had to get 2 shifter assembly's since they seem to only last about 6 months before there so sloppy it just gets way to hard to drive
and since now all the wreckers in my town don't have any manual shifter assembly's left i was wondering what other models of cars and years will the 5 speed shifter assembly fit in the festiva... I've hear rumors Mazda 323 shifter assembly's are the same but not 100% certain and dun wanna waste my time pulling it out only to find its the wrong one.. by the way I'm from australia so models of cars here may be different from overseas... also is there any way i can firm up a shifter?.. also id prefer something that's a direct swap as i don't have a hell of a lot of money and i'm not the engineering type so i cant make up plates and what not to fit other models shifters in. thanks

you just need new bushings probably....not a whole new assembly. Where are you located? Please add it to your profile when you get a chance....it really helps to answer questions and whatnot. Anyway....here they offer bushing packs at auto parts stores. They are used for door hinges and such. They are usually a mixed pack. There should be some that are real close and will help with the sloppiness. You also may be able to order new ones from the dealership....mazda, kia. Just need to find a car that coincides with your car.

yea that's what I'm trying t find out which models is the same... tried ford for the bush kit... they told me no can do due to my car being to old... didn't seem very help full at all, called a different ford dealer basically the same story, it seems that they just don't wanna help you at all when your car gets to old..... although the Mazda dealer told me if i find the right model Mazda and the parts are the same they will do there best to help me get it

I looked at a piece of 7/16 that looked real close. Put the piece in boiling water for a few minutes and slather with silicone to stuff it in place and run the bolt through it.

I'm taking my shifter to a builders supply store tomorrow to see what might turn up.

I rolled up a piece of plastic cut from an antifreeze jug and stuffed it into the female part. I had to trim off a bit to get the inside diameter big enough to get the bolt through. That material is not that different from the $25 worth of bushings.

My 1988 Festiva with 133 K miles was a bit sloppy.

My recently acquired 1988 with 193 K mostly city miles had no bushings left. From what I'm finding, the car had been abused and not well cared for.

If one got 5 years and 50 K miles out of rolled up plastic jug material, I'd call that good.

                NAPA Shifter Bushings

I found bushings today. A cooperative counter man looked and looked through the computer until a photo matched. He got two and they fit my shifter and bolt which I had brought along.

The two with tax cost $2.78

Photo of package with all numbers and bushings attached.
