  • Midwestiva '09 Planning thread

Since there has been a decent interest in the idea of a meet out here in the midwest I'm starting a planning thread.

Since we dont have the history/close proximity of members of the more eastern meets we need some detailed planning. The ozark(April) & st.louis(Oct) meets are growing every year so I'm hoping we can get something together during the summer and maybe eat, meet & greet with some other members who are unable to attend other meets.

If you are going to suggest some things, identify which of these your trying to give examples of.

What we need for specifiic locales are:
    1. Meeting points
    2. A little bit of a cruise route
    3. A park or something for grub.

    Previous suggestions have been
    Memphis,Tn
    Galena,IL
    DesMoines,IA
    Chicago,IL

Lets get something rolling. I'm hoping for a mid july or august meet.

I would like to make several meets myself if they are not the same weekend.

Looking at going to the Ozark meet next year since already been to Ohio two years in a row.

I would be interested in a meet in Memphis.

Well its just a planning thread to see what options exist.
If you wanna suggest Des Moines go ahead. I'll probbally show & bring my chicago group with.
Where are we eating? Whats the cruise route look like?

I'm suggesting Meeting @ Starved Rock state park, cruising the bluffs for a while then making our way to this great little cajun place on old RT 6

This seems to be a great place to meet as its near the crossroads of 2 interstates(I-80 &I-35) Decent scenery/driving roads as far as flat land illinois is concerned.

Memphis would be a good choice. Lotta stuff to do there. Relatively centrally located, except for those on the left coast. Obviously some people are going to drive further than others. Sorry its always going to work out like that. Cant be helped.
But man, Beale Street, you got BB Kings place there , Rum Boogie, Memphis Hard Rock Cafe. If you like Blues its the place to go. You got camping and other stuff at Mud Island. The Saturday August 8th begins Elvis Week it ends the following Sunday with events TBD. Although the 15th they open the gates of Graceland and hold a candlelight vigil marking the anniversary of Elvis' death.
The only city I see that could surpass that would be Chicago.
There Ive made my case for holding it in Memphis.

Starved rock is a nice area - decent scenery for IL

Galana is another great area - just make sure your parking brake works - pleanty of places to see and some good driving routes through the country side
you would want to avoid "Grants Pilgrimage" - not sure of the dates this year but the town is flooded with Boy Scouts

Chicago would be a great place - lot of sites to see and fairly close for the active members in IL

TN is a beautiful state - I would rather see this done in the autum when the leaves are changing for better pictures

dont know much about DesMoines my experience in IA is fairly similar in scenery to central IL

I would be up for the first 3 this summer - TN would be a long week for me because I would have to visit family while there - IA sounds like its already being planed and we would just attend
