  • What is this "token expired" deal now?(etc.)

As anyone familiar with my posts, of the "off-topic" variety especially, these can take a good deal of time to compose; which since the new thirty minute to editing a post rule, I've become increasingly interested in creating something I can live with on the site-sans any great embarrassment at least.(?)

Now, just today trying to post a new thread in the "off-topic" forum, I'm confronted with something I've never encountered before which is hugely annoying since causing me to loose the finished results of a long day's work, with just the initial version left I'd started with about eight or so hours ago.

This is where I get a message saying my "token has expired" when I try to send a window I want a preview on.

Previously I've been able to let a potential post sit for any length of time on the computer whether I was on-line or not, sometimes days at a time or even longer. As soon as I clicked "preview" the next window would come up in the browser as if I'd been there momentarily before.

I'd be curious why such change is necessary and the philosophies behind them too.

As with the relatively new thirty minutes to edit a post, which seems constrictive; yet also understandable if someone were to radically alter a post sometime later, which could make any subsequent dialogue seem irrational for instance.

Though with my long posts there seems to almost always be the chance to make my meaning more clear without alteration of the intent of my ideas at all.

Not to mention errors in punctuation or conjugation that are often way too common sometimes difficult to notice if mentally exhausted after working at the same thing a long time, as I transcribe my thoughts as though in conversation which can be ridiculous in print; until composed to a better literary standard so to speak.(my computer is old and also screwed up by demented service people; which doesn't have a word processing application any more, so that I tend to compose everything either in a browser window or the email application...the dock has malfunctioned for months now too, which would make "text-edit" easier to use, which is the only alternative)

No change that I know of on our end to make the notice " token expired" to pop up.
You might want to download Firefox and use it as your browser. It is quicker then Internet explorer and as you type....if you misspell a word it underlines it in red so you have a chance to change it by right clicking and selecting the right spelling.

Or if you can get it(which Im sure you can) Get IE8 Ive been using it since I built this new computer of mine and am very happy with it. Its fast and other than a few pages here and there that give it issues(which Ive been able to counter by hitting the Compatibilty button) Its been very good. Far better than previous versions of IE IMO. And Ive gotta add when Windows7 comes out itll be only the 2nd Windows OS Ive bought, XP being the 1st. And only because MS had a special offer at the time that I took advantage of.

I tried IE8 , because of you Monsoon...I loved it at first. But then I started having issues with it and I removed it and tried to reinstall 7 and it messed my comp up for a long time. I was not able to get on the net except when using firefox...plus my comp would not do the criticle updates and such. Finally got it straightened out with tech help from microsoft. They suggested waiting on IE8 if at all.
I really liked it while it was working though....lol.

I just have to remember to use the "edit" on the top of the computer screen to "copy" anything I'm unsure of I feel could be lost.

I try to always to that, but get caught unawares and am always peeved if I loose something.

Hard to recreate anything is my experience, like how many jazz musicians find recording an improvisation on something more than once or twice gets inferior.

Once, when I feel I've finally gotten something finished, I can never duplicate that; since built slowly out of many pieces and thoughts.

          Thanks for the advice though.

I have a cousin in Portland, OR who is a software designer for IBM I had a falling out with December of 2005; so I always imagine any number of enemies not necessarily him could be trying to mess with me due to my politics.(via the computer...lots of people took advantage of me in Arcata knowing I knew nothing about them, worse than buying at the most sleezy used car lot in my experience)

I'd had a weird dream about riding a motorcycle I'd had in '82. Now I feel I lost the momentum I had this morning writing about that dream most of the day, though I have the dream still written intact. I'll post that without the frills, which is weird enough to be interesting standing alone, though I'll miss all the great insults I thought of to go along with the dream. I guess that is perverse, but life seems to invite attitude in most everyone these days. Which I think is perverse, unlike some people who admire that; which I can also see and don't mind. Still perverse though if you think about the more positive alternatives assuming the attitude could be creatively done away with.

Couldn't you write elsewhere and then copy and paste it into a thread?

                Bugged with the whole mess.

Had I not bought my now "vintage"(parts no longer available from Apple) G-4 Mac from a second hand dealer suffering narcotics addiction from back pain(with a ballerina wife in even worse condition, some neurological brain malady often called "the suicide disease" over perhaps typical reaction to the pain levels involved) which there is no OS cd available for with an already corrupted OS, no word processing application and "text-edit" only available via a labyrinthine process to access thats now exponentially difficult due to new corruption from the KMUD-FM website(<http://www.kmud.org>) last Sunday night via their "Calendar Style Program Guide" page; which now makes about ten times longer(at least) anything having to do with the broswers.

Bobstad - Nothing has changed with the board that would give you an error like that. At least, not to my knowledge... And I'm pretty sure that I'm the only admin here making changes to the board like that (updates, etc).

From my rather quick Google search, it seems like you should have been able to click the Back button and retain the post.

My suggestion would be that if you're worried about losing the post... Simply do a Ctrl + A (in the text box), then a Ctrl + C. That'll select all the text and then copy it to the clipboard. You could paste it into Notepad or something similar until the post actually does go through on the board. (To paste into Notepad, simply open notepad and then do a Ctrl + V to paste it - or you can use the right mouse click too).

As for the 30 minute time limit for editing posts. That change was added so that users couldn't edit old posts in a thread to avoid (or potentially hide) a flame war, fight, etc. It wasn't done with the intentions of having any ill effects on posters such as yourself. If you need to make changes to your initial posts, please feel free to PM the moderator in charge of the forum that you post is in, or any of the admins, and we'll be happy to make the changes.

                  Hope that helps.

That would be my suggestion as well. Notepad, for instance.

I've had that "Token Expired" on more than one occassion when trying to post as well. Couldn't figuire out if I was doing something wrong lkie exceeding the time limit for writting/replying, since I am for the most part a 3-4 finger typer(both hands total), meaning really slow!

Anyways, would get that same "token expired" message and then instructed to "return back to previous page to renew token", something like. Followed the instructions only to find a blank page, text all gone and gotta start all over again.

I've learned to get around it as mentioned/suggested by right clicking and copy the text after highlighting it before sending it, saves me the headache should it vanish to where ever in cyberspace.

Anyways, thought to share, take care!
