  • hatch lid speakers

Anyone ever mount speakers in the rear hatch lid? I have a set of NIB 10yr old Alpine 6X9's I would like to use. I haul a lot of boxes in back and making a custom package shelf would not be very useful. I know the hatch is very shallow, but I thought about making spacer rings out of 1" thick plywood and attach them to a new hatch interior panel made out of thinner plywood. Then spray the inside w/undercoating to prevent panel vibrations and stuff the hatch lid with fiberglass insulation.

I was just checking that distance out for myself today , I have a set of shallow speakers I would like to put in the rear hatch, checking it a spacer of about an inch or so with a very shallow speaker might do it?? One side of the hatch is no problem , the side with the wiper motor on it is real shallow.
Aspires and Sways all around, Miata B6 installed, KYB G2Rs just installed in front. Wish for coil overs someday.

Too heavy for the lifter. I thought about doing the same thing.

I'm not too worried about that. I can always get one of those aftermarket sliding clip things that allow you to lock the gas support shock in the "up" position. Another option would be to use a smaller speaker, like 5-1/4" or 6" round.

My concern would be that there's not enough volume in the lid to allow for ample air displacement for the (2) 6X9 woofers. If you seal it up "air tight" it would produce tight Bass response but would require a lot more power to drive them. (Although I do have a 100W 2 Channel amp I could use). I also thought about turning it into a Bass-reflex encloser by adding a port tube or passive radiator. That would be ideal but it would require some research and calculations to get it tuned properly.

Just wondering if anyone had gone through it all before so I could cheat off them!http://www.fordfestiva.com/forums/im...ons/icon11.gif

I had some 6 x 9s CVs in those boxes you can get for like $20.00 and they were surprisingly bassy. I ran 14 or 16 guage wire to them and ran them off radio power. I would think the volume in the hatch would be very close to those. I wouldnt put too much insulation in there. Maybe get that inch thick nylon stuff at some craft store and just put a layer of it against the dynamat or whatever you use.
