  • Rear 6x9 install....

This is how I spent my last couple days. I removed the crummy fibreboard rear hatch cover and traced it onto a piece of plywood which I then cut out on a bandsaw. I had aftermarket 4" speakers in the stock location that blew up, so I ran wire from the stock location and hid it all in the pillars in the back, across the roof under the headliner, and ran the speaker wires through the hatch through the grommet for all the 3rd brakelight wiring. After that was complete, I measured up and traced out the outline that I would have to cut for the speakers. I had to make some plywood spacers due to lack of depth in the hatch, and also had to remove some metal from the hatch to allow enough clearance for the speakers. Since this was just a quick project, more in a form follows function way of thinking, the mounting system is not the best or the prettiest, and the speakers are kinda crooked, but it works, and it sounds phenominal when paired with the 6.5" MTX coaxials I have in the front doors. Taking my time, I probably would have carpeted the plywood panel and made some better spacers, but maybe another time. Next step is to install the 12" sub/box/capacitor I have from my old car....

Sorry about the lack of pictures, I didnt take any while I was working, but these should give you an idea...

Speakers have a 3" mounting depth. I think the panel I made is a bit less than a half inch thick, the spacers are made of half inch plywood, then I used some spacers that came with the speakers. There is not alot of room in the hatch, hence the spacers, but if I were to build it again, I'd probably build a small box to house the speakers in so I'd not have to take any metal out of the hatch or screw around with spacers...

Wonder about clearance if you have a rear wiper.
            Like the idea though!

If you were to build a small box to house the speakers instead of the way I did it, actually having alot of the speaker go into the hatch, you would basically eliminate any clearance issues. You could even buy a couple cheap 6x9 boxes, cut the bottoms off, then nail them to a board like the one I made to replace the crummy fibreboard stock piece...

The stereo drowns out most road noise now lol. Car is horribly loud to begin with inside, cant really say if ther is a difference or not with the wooden piece in place. I was going to dynamat the back of it, but decided not to in the end.

I definitely like the idea of putting speakers in the back, but I'd use particle board or MDF instead of plywood, and screws and wood sealer caulk & glue so that the boxes don't come apart over time due to opening and closing the hatch. How is the strut strength holding the hatch up?
