ok so they arent that bad in terms of performance but they are the sort of thing that will be made fun of when we read old car magazines with xplod ads in them. i'm going for a clarion head and have some pioneer 6x9's. at the moment have a 20 y.o. clarion/awa head out of my old 86 corolla. all i can say is it gets good radio reception.

hey don't knock sony...their stuff may seem cheesy, but hell they last alot longer than most other brands...i have run high end, high dollar clarions and alpines, and had them burn out before a cheese-ball Jensen that i bought 10 years ago in high school. bottom line Sony builds a quality product that lasts and doesn't cost a small fortune....whats the downside here?Jesus is on my dashboard, But the Devil is under my hood

downside= If you want to go to Wal-Mart to get a cd player that everyone else has, then great. Me personally, I want the most bang for my buck. Sony does not offer that in any package, even the es. Now, ES is a better line than the xplod line, but not much better.
Since on the subject, i wonder why they call it Xplod. Is that what it does a couple years after having it?

I had a Sony Xplod ES for more than 5 years (and still have it) and I'm almost totally satisfied. For the price I paid it's the best radio that I could afford ($500 CAN) even in Alpine it didn't had the options that I have for the price. It's sure tho that the Sony has the winter problem but I can live with it. Again this week I took someone in my car and said "Wow! your radio is awesome!" Yeah he was talking about the look but I don't know anyone else that have the same CD-player than me.
But hey, that's my opinion and I'm not forcing anyone to agree with me. The next CD-player that'll buy will be an Alpine about 2000$ and all the other components that I have are Kicker (hell yeah!).Is that a Festiva that just passed me?!?!?!

We've all got a brand we feel is best. I'm partial to Kenwood, always had good luck with them. Used to be a dedicated Pioneer man, but they drove me away with shitty quality about 6 years ago. As for Sony, the Xplod line has got to be one of the biggest pieces of shit I've seen in awhile. We had an Xplod Focus option in 2000/2001 (can't remember), and we bought most of them back due to audio system problems that we rooted back to Sony, and they were less than gracious about it ("its not the equipment, it must be the car"). How a car can cause head units, amps, subs, and speakers to fail in a large number of the total vehicles produced escapes me. Maybe they are ok, just the ones they sold Ford were garbage, I dunno. You won't find their products in my cars.

Aspire sound system
I wanted a head unit I could operate without having to stop the car. Some of the ones I looked at are too complicated to operate with while trying to drive in traffic. I chose a Pioneer head unit with good features that are reasonably easy to use. It's 50 watts x 4 and the Aspire takes 5 1/4" round speakers front and rear. I got 4 Polk audio speakers and to my surprise they produce good full body sound at all volume levels without sounding like they are stressing. I have a feeling that mediocre speakers of that size would have been a mistake.

hey! a friend of mine gave me a set of xplod 6 1/2's for the holes on my doors. he upgraded to mb quart (sound sweet). Stuck em in Uncle Fester this past weekend, and I must say, I was impressed by their (lack of)sound quality. I was wholey underwhelmed by the tinny, weak sound emanating from their Dixie-cup quality cones. these are best left to the wal-mart shoppers.....Jim DeAngelis

Another thing is that different suppliers apparently (heard from a friend) sell different levels of quality for the same product if they know they are going to sell enough of them that the percentage of returns will not impact their business. Don't know for sure if it's true, but I always feel lucky when I buy something from Best Buy and it actually doesn't break.
Re decks, I trust Blaupunkt (sp?). But to be honest, I don't see any company making car stereos the way I want them. Seems like every one has jumped on the bandwagon of multifunction controls where you have to navigate through menus just to adjust the friggin EQ. Cheap for them to engineer and manufacture, but shitty to actually use. Unsafe really.

your friend is correct. manufacturers have first, second, and even third quality products. the 1q goes to premium retailers, the 2q and 3q go to bulk retailers, warehouse clubs, QVC/HSN, etc.... oddly enough, some large retailers like Crutchfield usually get the 1qs, because they have less overhead and give manufacturers a raft of crap over failed units. its all up to the purchasing agent.... the two most evil words in the English language.......
