  • Radio relocate write up w/pics

I have seen the radios on many cars relocated to the lower tray to make room for a cup holder. Finally did it myself and had a camera.
I starter with a full booted shift console

I used the radio cage as a template, I had to remove a lot of martial to make it fit, as you can see I followed the line for the insert shelf, and left the top strip of plastic from the shelf cage

In this one you can see some of the damage I did with the rotor-zip(way too much power to be cutting plastic)

Now I did not have a cup holder at the time, I just got bored one night. So I have a huge hole in the stock din spot. Than I had a idea..

Did not say a good idea, Cut to fit, used some self tapping screws

And boom goes the dynamite. You can see were I did more damage over tightening the screws

Here we have the final product

    and installed in Bruce

The problem I have seen with the radio there is the cups in the cupholder in the radio bezel drip condensation onto the radio. I want to do what you did but set the radio more recessed into the cubby.

Question.. has anyone put the cupholders themselves into the lower space? Maybe the bigger cubby? Just thinking again, condensation and spillage..

If the radio can be made to fit into the lower unit, would have to think that the cupholder could be as well..

That would put the cupholders on an angle, so cups would hit the dash. On top of that, the shifter would hit them in 1st, 3rd, and 5th gear unless you get (make) a crazy short shifter with a 3" throw.

shifter does not hit them....that is where I originally had mine. Problem was the condensation would run backwards all over the boot and console.

Chris...In the upper position the condensation does not drip on the radio. and to keep any from dripping at all I would just take a napkin and fold it up and then set the can or cup on it. Once wet it would stay in the hole when you picked up the drink.

Ive noticed in AU if you ever find a console as they are very rare, they all have the radio in the console. Most of them are from the 121 though.

The console that he used was off of an automatic. So the shift boot is custom. I do know that the shift boot off of a 1990ish toyota camry shift boot will work with it and make it look factory.

I got my shifter console off a 1992 auto, and I have no clue how to do the shift boot. I'll probably run to the yard and get a leather one off a civic...
