  • Replacing original rear speakers

First off, I know nothing about audio equipment.

The original rear speakers in my 1990 surf blue have cracks at the edges of the sound cone.

I want to replace them with similar inexpensive speakers that will be an exact fit. Don't really need any sound enhancement, just
so the sound is as good as the original. Original speakers are 25W 4 ohm.

The speakers shown in this link at AMAZON say they will fit the 1990 Festiva. They are 180W vs original 24W. Will this matter?
Any issues I need to be concerned about?
Should I replace all 4 at the same time?

The following link shows the 5.25 inch speakers when you click on it..the speakers that I'm talking about are the 4" speakers priced at $20.60 that you have to click on to see the specs. Couldn't make the link go directly to them for some reason.

for rear fill, the Pyle units will be fine, but i recomend you upgrade your fronts to something a little nicer:

        or http://www.crutchfield.com/p_206KS40...40.html?tp=102

        or http://www.crutchfield.com/p_2064CS4...44.html?tp=102

any of these will fit without modifing your front grills and give MUCH better results

as for their power rating, your headunit is only good for about 20W max, so all of these speakers will handle that with ease.

That wattage rating is a power HANDLING, not production. Speakers receive power, they don't make it.

And the ratings on cheap speakers are usually WAY overrated. Send 240w RMS to those and tell me what happens (hopefully not a fire)

A speaker with around 30w RMS power handling is the max I'd use with just a deck to power them.

OK... So here are the specs on the Sony CD/Tuner
              • [*=left]Max Output Power / Channel Qty52 Watts x 4
                [*=left]Continuous Power / Channel Qty17 Watts x 4
                [*=left]Amplifier Output Details17 Watt - 4 Ohm - THD 1.0 % - 14.4V DC - 4 channel(s)

I'm looking for inexpensive speakers that will bolt right in, not crack with age, handle the maximum 52W output and sound half-way decent.
Something between the $6.90 parts express ones and the
              $50.00 Crutchfield ones.

From the advice so far... I'm going to go ahead and order the Pyle speakers for the rear and decide on the front ones later (they are working OK now and don't have cracks.

              Thanks everyone for the input.

I would probably get some kickers like these

But since all the speakers are only 4" it's pretty hard to go wrong. These are fairly inexpensive but are good quality and sound good. You can get cheaper ones that will probably be just fine for you.
The majority of 4" round speakers will fit in all the stock places.

I have these in my front and they sound great.

It is the 17 watts that you need to look at. 52 is peak the 17 is what it is actually pushing out. Most speakers should handle them just fine. Again, with these kickers they are very durable, I think they would work great for what you are wanting.

One day I accidentally got into the car through the back door, and broke the side shelves.
Then decided to add sound, and make all the shelves safer.
                  Sorry for my "English".

Speakers sound best when power going to to them is closer to the rms power rating.
So say for example your deck puts out 17 watts continuous power with occasional peaks to 50 watts.
If you can match the speakers to the rated output they will be more efficient in turning that power into volume for that specific power output.

You could buy some 50 watt rms speakers and use those they would leave lots of headroom but the downside to running them off of the stock deck is that since the output will be rated at 17 watts they won't be powered to their full potential which means they will put out less volume and will be capable of more sound but when the deck is turned up to compensate for the lack of wattage it will start to send a clipped signal and this is what you want to look out for the most.

Running off of the head unit I would suggest getting some speakers with the highest sensitivity you can find. That way they will produce the most decibels off of the power they are rated for. Or in essence they would be more efficient at converting wattage to decibels.

I would suggest gaining some knowledge on car audio before you decide what you want. You should come join this car audio forum. the Pyles are ok only as rear fill, thats why i said go and get them. as for front speakers: they're an investment, don't be afraid to spend a little more. $50 per pair is cheap for a decent quality speaker. i've spent $150+ for a good pair of fronts.

also the list i gave you was truncated and just an example of model #s, i wouldnt purchace from crutchfield if i could help it.

                          Thanks for the advice everyone...

I'm just going to install the Pyles in the rear and leave the front ones as they are for now.
At 68 and getting a little hard of hearing, just keeping the Festivas in shape to pass along to my grand kids keeps me pretty busy.
I'll leave it up the grand kids to invest in the good audio equipment.

There is nothing as innocent and/or naive as asking for "sound" advice in forums like this. For some folks everything under and behind the front seats is devoted to speaker enclosure and if they could figure out a way to dispense with the engine there would be similar space up front, for even more speakers and sound related stuff.
None of my OEM radios work anymore (planned obsolescence from the car makers or merely a premonition of what to expect from electronic-governed cars in the long term) and I spend most of my time listening for engine/mechanical noises and trying to keep the cars going rather than focusing on sound systems.
I probably have an extra set or two of OEM front and rear speakers lying around if that was something you really wanted. Believer it or not rear speakers weren't common in Canadian cars.

                              I understand Bert...
I wasn't looking for "sound" advise. Just asking to make sure the replacement speakers would work with the radio.
Maybe I should have posted in the general forum instead of the custom audio forum. The original speakers would have been fine except for the
fact that the material that the sound cone is made of crumbles with age and exposure to the elements in the back.
I still have the original OEM radio with cassette player and the original speakers in my 1992 aqua...still working ok. (It was a one owner that was garage kept.)
The new rear speakers are for my original 1990 surf blue (323,000) that I bought new. It went through over eight years as a college student's car and now it's
back home to me. My youngest son had installed the Sony radio/cd. Now I'm just cleaning it up and getting everything back to working order so I can pass along to one of the grand kids when they start to drive.

Rear speakers started to become common in car here in the 70's.
Were rear speakers an option on the Canadian Festivas?
