  • Finally new radio!

    Hi Guys:
Just wanted to share my new radio and speakers set up; pretty simple really. I dont like the all west coast customs look hehehe.
While changing the front speakers, I found that it had a pair of Alpine speakers. Were these the OEM speakers back in 1989?

I'm going to install my stuff tomorrow. Just got the head unit in right now. I have Alpine type S 6.5 components. Drivers going in the doors (need to modify some stuff) and tweeters up on the A pillars. A pair of Pioneer 6x8's going in the back somehow. Gonna get some pioneer or kicker 4's for the dash as well (alpines are amped so those can run off the deck) and throwing my dual 12" sub or my kicker L5 in the trunk until I can afford something better.

Thks Guys, I need to re-do the door panels, may be i'll add the speakers too. The 2 pairs of 4" sound very nice ( for a daily driver) but lack on bass... I was thinking something about this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/SOUNDSTORM-L...item2589ef23b6

I don't want to loose any space in the back, so i was thinking place the sub under the passenger sit...
Funny that the old alpines are 8 ohms, haven't seen any 8 ohms car speaker lately..

When I bought my 92 L new, the only option I chose was was Air because the dealer wanted $250 for AM-FM only. Next day I got a local radio shop to install an Alpine AM-FM cassette and 2 of those identical speakers you showed. The radio died a few months before the car died about 5 years ago. When I got it up again 3 months ago, I went back to the same dealer for a replacement and they hooked up the same Pioneer you got to those Alpine speakers, but the years had taken a toll on one of them. Looking for replacement speakers (4") nowadays that don't have some sort of tweeter cone protruding out front so that they won't mount in the dash grilles is tough. I finally robbed 2 out of some little KLH stereo speakers that I had from a yard sale.

The pioneer speakers sound nice and don't have the tweeter sticking out; the ones i put in the back do, but they fit perfectly....
i would like to put an electric antenna, can't think how though... i like car to look as stock as possible, so cutting a whole on the fender would mean having to patch the windshield frame and paint.. so no to that...
i think i'll spend the money on the sub....
By the way I saved the alpine speakers hehehehe just for nostalgic.....

I just googled those pioneer speakers and apparently they are not available in the US market. Anyone know of any speakers stateside that mount behind the dash grilles?

If you must use the horrible stock locations, I have a set of Rockford Prime 4" co-axes in my beater and they fit behind the grills. Though stock location sucks for sound quality plus you only reproduce sound down to 400hz at best probably more like 5-600hz. Even am radio listening it is horrible. Please try and convince yourself to put a decent set of 6.5" in the doors.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm not much of an audiophile, maybe because of my crappy hearing( hearing aids in both ears) and I agree about the lame positioning of the stock locations, but I don't want to cut panels or rewire anything. Thanks again.

It is possible to mount the dash speakers from the fwd side of the dash behind the grills. It's a little tricky, but can be done fairly easy. Remove the nutclips from the dash and put them onto the speakers. Slip the speakers in from under the dash. Enjoy! BTW, I bought some used boston acoustics for mine for less than $40 off the bay, shipped.
