  • Questions about replacing the speakers

Ok...lets, for a moment, pretend that I understand almost nothing about
    speakers and such.

I'm just looking for a decent set of speakers to replace my blown stock
speakers. I bought these, but they were way too quiet:

I tried them in the front and figured maybe it was the downfiring speaker
placement, but then when I tried them in the rear they were just as quiet.
They were quieter than my stock speakers. I figured Kicker was a good
brand so where did I end up going wrong?

What would be a good, cheap, decent sounding speaker that gets fairly loud
that I can throw in this car without any real modifications? Currently I have
some random JVC stereo in there from the previous owner.

A 4" speaker is not going to be terribly loud no matter what brand you buy. You could amplify them to make them a little louder but without them being enclosed you lose a lot of the sound. A speaker baffle might help a little with that but I can't promise anything. If you could find the specs of your current head unit and see if it will handle a 2ohm load at each channel than you could just build a couple external speaker boxes and mount them to the floor in the back with a separate set of speakers in them.(5x7 or 6x9 would work well)

I'm not aware of any non-high dollar head unit that can handle a 2 ohm load.

I also run a set of Kickers in one of my cars and have no volume issues. I attribute this to tuning and proper crossover points. A 4" speaker isn't any good below 100 Hz or so so don't try to push it down there, the required excursion limits the dynamic range considerably.

Use the built-in crossover in the head unit and add a small sub to fill in the bottom end, the results will be dramatic.

You can get really good sound and bass out of a quality 8" sub.

Not being enclosed only loses bass.

I built a cargo cover with built in speakers. So it reflected directly off my rear window and then up front. Sounded great

Hmmmm. Well, I was hoping to just drop some speakers in there. Nothing to add extra weight or take up more room. The stock speakers got loud enough for me, but over half of them were blown :/

The stereo is a JVC KD-G340 if that helps. Not sure what ohm's do

Ohms is what electrical load is measured in. Most car head units are stable at 4 ohms. Going lower starts to cook the internal amp. You can always go higher with an amp, but every doubling of the load results in a 3dB loss in total output per speaker. What's the sensitivity of those Kickers? I suspect they're around 87dB@1W/M (that's 87 dB with one watt of input power of pink noise measured at 1 meter from the speaker). A higher sensitivity number is a more efficient speaker. Every 3dB gain means the required power output for the same volume drops by half. Example: if you have a 87dB 1W/M speaker, a 93dB W/M speaker needs only .25W to reach the same volume of 87dB

I have Kicker 4" in the front and 5 1/4" in the back. I do have an aftermarket HU. It was better than stock but nothing to write home about. I installed a 12" Infinity sub and Amp. With the addition to that, IMO, it has seemed to put less strain on the speakers and actually not distort. This is what I am running for the sub. Fits perfectly and still have room on the side to store items. I made a shelf for the amp where the spare would go.

Hmmmm...I'm looking for getting some speakers, but not spending more than like $100. I
don't even really care about good quality sound, just so long as it gets decently loud. The
less work the better. I'm getting lazy when it comes to my cars these days. If it's gonna be
too much more than $100 I'll probably try and go to the junk yard and see if they have a
Festiva I can pull the speakers from. Any sound is better than no sound so long as I can
hear it. I could hear the stock ones decently, but they were trashed for the most part.

If anyone has any cheap 4" speakers that they think would be better that I can just swap
in and call it a day I'd be happy to hear about it Preferably not having to add anything
extra like an amp or a sub.
