And I took the plastic cover off....Should I leave it off or put it back on and what does the plastic cover do?

I guess that depends what you prefer. The plastic or plexiglass cover is what makes the band pass box a band pass box and not just a speaker mount

It creates a chamber in front of your speakers. The box should sound drastically different with it off. Do whatever sounds best.

put it back on or make a proper box.

the box is (should) be tuned to a certain freq. and with that gone it totally messes stuff up.
