  • Aftermarket Head Unit Problems

I bought my car from my cousin a while ago and he had a head unit and speakers installed by a "professional" shop, and I've had some problems.

It has a fairly expensive head unit ($260) in it,and it started cutting out when turning the steering wheel a certain way. Now, it has power, will connect via Bluetooth, and show that it it playing a CD, but I have no sound.

I pulled it out of the dash and saw that they had used red butt connectors on nearly everything. It also had an amp and subs in it, but he took the subs out and left the amp.

My question is, is there any way that disconnecting the power to the amp would have anything to do with me losing sound on any other speakers? I don't really want to tear it all apart if I don't have to. I'm currently using a small Bluetooth speaker for music. Lol

If the amp was being used to power the main speakers, unplugging would then cause an issue. But if it was just an Amp for the sub, it shouldn't make a difference when unplugged. Butt connectors, on the other hand, often suck. I would put money on a loose wire (or a few loose wires)

Basically what Will said... check to make sure the amp is actually a 4 channel amp powering your speakers.

I would invest in a soldering iron and eliminate the crimp connectors. All it takes is one intermittent connection to cause the pr9blems you have described.

I agree that soldering the wires would've been the thing to do. I probably would have had I done the job. And about the amp, I'm pretty sure that the only wires running to it were the two that went to the suns and the two rca type that ran to the back of the radio, other than power and ground.

There may possibly be some negative results if the ends of those RCA wires are grounding out or touching each other but I don't think they would cause all of the sound to go away.

rewire without sub wiring and solder all connections as Rick mentioned.I've been installing car audio for over 25 years and learned early on about butt connectors lol.
