Illumination wire?

Well, after installing my new clarion head unit i only just bothered to read the instructions and discovered that there is an illumination wire. i figure that this works in the same way as the lighting on the heater controls when you turn your headlights on. any suggestions as to the easiest way of correctly aquiring the desired effect? or should i just not bother. it is rather bright at night

On my festiva the illumination wire in the radio harness is red with a green stripe (red/green).

To make the radio i had illumination dim i spliced it right into the dimmer switch... that is a real easy shortcut if you can not find the wire like my car..
