  • silver car sound system install (new pics 04/15... NEONS!!!)

I came home after church today and when I went in my room to change out of my khakis and knit shirt and the light was off... I tripped over this giant speaker box that has been in there for well over a year now. It has two audiobahn 12" subs and a 1200 Xplod amp in it. I decided that that thing was really starting to annoy me, and I was going to throw the amp and the speakers into the silver along with an Xplod 12" sub I had in the closet from an even longer time ago. Everything is in now but nothing is hooked up because I haven't run wires to the amp yet. The only thing missing is my Xplod 5 1/4"s three ways that will be mounted on the shelf tonight.

DISCLAIMER: Just in case any true audio gurus see this set up, yes I know it is blasphemy to have Xplod equipment in the same system Audibahns... but these are what I have aquired over the years, and the only reason I even reinstalled all this stuff that was originally in the little blue is because I got tired of it sitting in my floor waiting till I found a buyer for it.

    Ok, now the pics

First I built a shelf (that will probably get gray carpet sometime, many thanks to warlocke for the tip about finding carpet at hobbylobby)

Cutouts for the bottom of the third brake light and for the hatch support strut

Then I made another flat peice that slopes down at an angle so that I wouldn't lose ALL my cargo space in the trunk... I cut out three 11" holes in it too

Then I stuck a 12 in each one of the holes

Then I mounted an amp to the back of the rear seat... not the best place for it, but it fit there so thats where it got put

The rear seat also doubles as an access hatch to work on the rest of the wiring and to tune everything once its hooked up

And in the process of this install I managed to lose only a little more than half of my rear cargo space.

List of things left to do:

    1. run the wires and hook everything back up... shouldn't be too hard because I still remember exactly how I ran the wires in the little blue, so I just have to duplicate that

    2. mount the Xplod 5 1/4"s in the new shelf... also shouldn't be hard

    3. get some grills for the speakers so if I do have to put anything cargo back there they will be protected

    4. paint/carpet/cover everything so it looks professional and not like some carpenter dude just built a box and stuck speakers in it (which is in reality what actually happened )

All in all though, I don't think its too shabby of a job to have gotten this far in one sunday afternoon after church. Hopefully soon I'll get to throw a clip up in the video section of this thing bumpin 'n' thumpin

Couple more pics of the setup at night. I'd almost forgotten I replaced my dome light with a 30" blue neon last week and when I went back out and opened the door to work on hooking everything up the light came on and it looked so good I had to shoot a couple more pictures... sorry, they are a little grainy because my phone doesn't like low light very much.

Let me know what you guys think!

^^^ thanks, lol, i figured i'd get called out sooner or later... I got the Xplod sub for free and the speakers and amp were on clearance at best buy and i had one of my buddies that works there get them for me so i only payed less than $60 for the amp and two speakers. They were cheap, but they were... cheap... lol... the only Xplod equipment I've ever owned and liked is the head unit in the blue car. its not the best ever, but it was really cheap and has the big color changer screen on it, lol

Funny Sony should be mentionned, I just got some xplod 4x4. They work great. I'm not looking to enter any competitions, just get some ok'ish sound.

The pionneers that were in there had blown. I like the setup. Doesn't leave much trunk space though.

Do you know where I can route some wires through the firewall? I'm trying to have the amp feed straight off the new battery I just got. It has side poles that aren't used.

well, there's several ways to run cables through the firewall... I've drilled holes before and used rubber coolant hose pushed through to provide a cushion so the metal doesn't cut the wires... this time I just poked a hole in the boot where the clutch goes through and push a couple wires through that. It worked fine. And as for trunk space, yes it eats about half the trunk space... but it leaves a lot more room than what most people with a system have, even with a larger car. Plus it actually leaves at least some room (even if it isn't as much) unlike the giant box the Audiobahns used to be in that took up the whole trunk, and that was just for two speakers :!:

So there isn't a default place where some cables go through? I was thinking of "sharing" with the speedo cable at worst.

BTW where is Dahlonega, GA? I will freekin ship you a rear bumper, as soon as I can get FMS on the horn. I ordered a full kit but now they're not picking up the phone. :/ The 91 deserves better than that.

hehe, dahlonega is down in the bottom righthand corner of the US, lol... and I actually have a place around here where I can get a bumper and it won't cost any shipping, but its the least of my worries, right now I'm just trying to get all the goodies that I want installed and operable. The bumper was crunched when I bought the car, so its not my fault, which is why I don't worry about it, lol, I'm not ashamed of it... unlike when I dented the fender on the little blue, that was my fault, and I went out the next day and picked up a fresh new fender for it

Found the last surviving relic of my old underbody neon system last night (besides the 30 incher that is installed in place of my dome light right now) and installed it in the hatch. I wired it up to the switch I rigged up for the hatch light, so its only on when the hatch is open. Its a 48" so it runs the full width of the trunk space lol. Looks pretty neat at night though, since I'm working on tweaking this setup for showing it off and lots of folks care about what it looks like as much or more than how it actually sounds  Here's a couple night time pics looking into the hatch

I'm going to get some carpet or other fabric (whatever I decide looks good) hopefully tonight, my goal is to have it looking and sounding great by this coming weekend... we'll see...
