Well the factory stereo matches pretty well in size to most of the aftermarket units available. If you want you can get a wiring harness for the wiring so you don't have to cut the factory wiring at all, but I've never used one of those before cause I don't see much point on an old car that is nowhere near having a warranty anyway. And as for actually mounting it, what I've found works the best is that there are two different lengths of trim screws on a festy... the ones in the bottom of the radio/heater control bezel are the shorter ones and the other kind is about 1/4" longer. Find two of the longer ones somewhere on or under the dash (I think the ones that hold the glovebox hinges may be the longer kind, but I'm not positive). Anyway, all I did was swap the shorter screws for the longer ones, and when they tighten all the way down, they push up on the bottom of the stereo just a bit and hold it in position. Not the most perfect solution, but hey, it works and I've installed three different aftermarket units in two different festivas over 3 years time without a problem...
    No festiva for me ATM...

Yea i know about wiring harness and such, i just soldered&heat shrinked the wires together. I was more wondering about brackets and such, the radio is quite loose in there without anything holding it in. Ive seen lots of after-market radios installed in fests in the j/y but there usually in there with redneck homemade brackets.

i wouldn't waste the money on heat shrink tubes. just get some of the crimp ones and they'd be just as good in this situation. the heat shrink ones are for wires that may get wet for the most part.

sweet! I scored the bracket in the j/y I was lucky too, someone had took the head unit but left the bracket in the car!
It works really nice. Holds the radio nice and firm. Im gonna do a how-to later.

All I've been able to find is home-brew brackets as well to hold them in... I had a good idea a few years ago with cutting the original brackets from a stock radio and using them to mount up, but it was harder than I thought...

It'd be cool for someone to make a decent bracket set to sell...

I just installed an Alpine using the brackets that came with it.
Works better that I thought it would have.
I also installed the factory rear support stud on the back.
But I had to make the stud using a long screw I got from Lowe's.

As for the wiring I used a Mazda 86-89 adapter harness part # BHA1781 (don't know the brand, I threw that part away).

Hey guys, I know this isn't the newest of threads, but it's definitely applicable.

Sorry for the long link, but anyway, that's a multi-kit from the same company as the wiring harness, and it fits on the Festiva... any idea if that's what we need instead of makeshift brackets or luck at the junkyard?

                Or perhaps this one:
