Im a new Festiva owner and plan on a full tune up very soon, Ive read alittle on here about 1&2 stage thermostats but i can only seem to find stant 1 stage? I live in cali, so i dont run into freezing or really hot temps too often. right now the temp needle doent move much unless i let it sit and idle for a good 10 min, even still ive never seen it hit operating temp or get close to the half way mark. Do i even need a new thermo?

Sounds like it, yes. You want the thing to get up to normal operating temperature; that's what the t-stat does. If it is stuck open (sounds like your's is) then the engine temperature varies too much.
