  • Question about f series trnsmissions

Lots of people have swapped in the g25 trans into their Festiva, and the methodology has been well documented. What I'm wondering is if anyone's swapped in the f series trans from a 323 with a B6?

I know that for the g25 to work, one needs the axles from a 323GT, but what axles would one need for the f series tranny?

    Just wondering.

i'm actually about to do this with a BP, the trans i got is from an 88 323, B6 SOHC, i've already had the tranny in the engine bay with the axles from the 323 installed and the ball joints closed fine

at the time i wasn't patient enough to make mounts, which is why it didn't get installed, but it will shortly, i can let you know more as i dig into it

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

The CV axles are the same? Really? Wish I'd known this sooner. I'm looking for some better gear ratios, and I think this would be just the thing to make it work. First gear with the B6 has been almost unnecessary. I've found that it's revved out after about 15 feet, so I just start in second most of the time.

The axles you use have to come from a 86-89 323 that way the outer spline matches with the festiva knuckle. if you were to use a 90 or newer 323 axle (or NA capri since they are the same) they have different spline count on the outside hub and you would have to swap hubs in order to use these. Same goes with the protege axles. Here are the axle dimensions. I researched these for another persons project. This is really good info which is asked for alot. (probably should be stickied)

festiva and aspire axles have an inboard spline count of 22 with an outboard spline count of 24. Lengths, for the festiva, are 23 7/8" and 34 5/8" left and right, respectively. Lengths, for the aspire, are 24 1/8" and 34 13/16" left and right, respectively.

Capri XR2 and 323GT have an inboard spline count of 26 with an outboard spline count 24. Lengths are 23 1/4" and 21 3/16" (not including intermediate shaft), left and right respectively.

Escort GT and 92-94 protege have inboard spline count of 26 but an outboard spline count of 26. Lengths are 23 15/16" and 24 3/8" (not including intermediate shaft), left and right respectively.

98+ kia sephia has an inboard spline count of 28 with an outboard spline count of 26. Lengths are 24 1/4" and 24 1/2" (not including intermediate shaft), left and right respectively.

NA Capri and 90-94 323 have an inboard spline count of 24 with an outboard spline of 26. Lengths are 24 1/2" and 35 9/16", left and right respectively.

86-89 323 has inboard spline count of 24 and an outboard spline count of 24. Lengths are 24" and 35", left and right respectively.

All axles were for cars with manual transmisions

One other thing...what about the clutch? Same input shaft splines as the Festy trans? Or would I need to switch to B6/F series clutch and flywheel setup?

today i just tried usin the festiva clutch alignment tool on a B6 clutch and the splines are different, so use the clutch and flywheel that matches the tranny

like i said i'm in the process right now of puttin in a BP with a tranny from an 88 323 that had a B6 SOHC, which i beleive is the f-series trans (can someone who knows, confirm this so i know if i should be callin it an F-series tranny or not)

That is correct. Your tranny is an F-series. Typically when matching a non factory combination of engine and tranny, you want to use the flywheel and clutch that match the tranny. This is not the case when the flywheel will not bolt to the engine. It can be a hassle to get your flywheel drilled for the different bolt pattern. Also if the flywheel is not the right size, the starter may not be able to engage the flywheel. Thankfully this is not the case for the swaps that we do. Since all the information I have points to the fact that the G-series tranny is the same size as the F-series in the bell housing area, I would check to ensure that the BP clutch will work the F-series tranny and then use the BP flywheel if that is the case. The BP was designed to use that particular flywheel, so it is best to stay with that one.

does anyone know the spline count on the b6t FWD part that goes into the jackshaft/ intermediate shaft?

the part that goes into the jackshaft has a spline count of 26. These numbers were taken from a book to help recognize CV shafts. So the inboard spline count is for the CV shaft. I am assuming the end of the jackshaft has a spline count of 26 also. I do not know how long the jackshaft is.
