I'm not swapping the engine, just pulling it out to change seals and clutch. Is it possible to pull the engine out without the tranny? I've got the Haynes book and its got instructions to pull it ALL out, but I didnt want to have to go that far.

yes it is possible to pull the engine without the tranny. It will be almost impossible to put it back in. I received a festiva in this condition and could not line up the clutch and the transmission to slide everything back together. I eventually pulled the tranny. If you pull the tranny, you can also replace some seals on that, like the input seal and the two output axle seals.

It's easy, with a bit of patience.

so thats 3 for yes, and one for no?
i could really use a definite answer here.
what do you mean, with a little patience?
and why won't it line up? i've never done this before, so what is it that needs to line up when i'm throwing it back together?

What won't line up is the shaft of the tranny and the clutch. So I advise you to remove the tranny too. It does not take much more time and you will not have the trouble to align the shaft and the clutch and you can clean it.

I wasn't saying it was impossible. i just said it wasn't easy to line the transmission and engine up and get them to slide together. If they are out of the car it is a whole lot easier. If you leave it in, you could get lucky and it slide together perfect because you just happened to align the clutch in just the right spot. But if you are changing the clutch, I would suggest replacing some seals in the transmission, that way it will last as long as the new clutch, and not drip fluid.
