  • Hola! Me llaman Santos..

    Hi,
I'm called Santos, I'm 22 years old, Brazilian/Australian and armed with a license to drive

    Today i purchased a red '87 Mazda 121 Funtop. I am owner No: 3.5.
It has excellent service history with 190 000km's (118066.00000  )
The body/interior is immaculate and the motor revvy and responsive. It is stock and 'factory' condition.
(I actually cringe at the idea of changing anything it's so nice :? )
Best of all is words on the manufacturer's plaque. Made in Japan.

The reason why i got it was to have a platform to get some experience in engine blueprinting. (I own a '92 Suzuki Sierra, second owner. I have plans for it but i don't want to touch it while I'm 'green') I liked the little Funtops and the B-Series works out to be quite a flexible platform for what i want to do.

    And that is this:

In Australia engine mods need engineer's certificates and grossly effect insurance and registration... not to mention anything not listed is a playground for police defect notices which require it going over the pits leading to more defect's etc etc.

So what I'm wanting to do is work with my current engine block. After all if it's engine number matches the one on the registration papers and all the stuff appears stock then a random police officer wouldn't really know things like it's supposed to be packing a Carby and not EFI or that air box was only available from 93 onwards and so on. (I actually checked with the motor registry and they said it was OK to interchange parts to older models if it was available on a same design later model vehicle providing all the pollution gear was carried over)

I was winning a complete B5 motor on Ebay for $50 but the seller cancelled the auction as the item was 'damaged'

Anyway since i didn't get it i have a clean slate for ideas !
The essential ingredients have to be Junkyard sourceable and Stealth.

    Idea no 1.
Bore out the block to 75mm to use OEM B5 pistons. (which then can be taken to 76mm in the future if i keep the car) bolt on a B3 16v SOHC off a later model Mazda DB 'bubble' with EFI manifolds. Megasquirt fit into B3 ECU shell. All the little things like helping it breath ,swap in B5 cams and valves etc
Theory. Smaller head cylinder volume will lead to a higher compression. Making it a NA engine. Arguably as it's all internal you can't be expected to know about it.

    Idea no 2.
Bolt on a B5 16v SOHC, standard 71mm bore, place a small supercharger where a factory A/C would be , belt tensioner and all (be really cheeky and have a plaque made with the Mazda factory A/C part number and stick it on) a bypass valve (not a blow off) again the Megaquirt inside the ECU housing and all the little things (stage one this forums calls it)
Theory. Larger cylinder head volume would lower the compression. Have the supercharger's electro-magnetic clutch hooked to a switch on the dash (My idea is to find an auto gearbox power/economy switch, a little less conspicuous then a missile toggle switch )
triggering a mild boost of 6-8psi.

It's all theory so i am sure there will be many obstacles but I'm wanting realistic gains on a budget and Boring + Supercharging as Idea 3 (which some off you had for just that moment) is doubling my cost

    Anyway that's me in brief.

Sounds interesting! And welcome to FF.COM!

The Mazda Demio has a newer version of a B series engine? (The Demio is the "Bubble," right?)

What if you "blew" your current original engine and had to replace it with another block? Could you arrange something like that, and have a friendly mechanic substitute the B5 block?

yes but the engine is in such nice condition I'm having issues with even modify-ing (Which is exactly why i bought it so i wouldn't have issues doing mods to my Suzuki when I'm done levelling up my exp on the Mazda)
Although ''Technically' I can increase the engine capacity up to 15% without a engineers certificate.. making a plain B5 SOHC 16valve efi swap within my limits (again not the intended exercise)

The Mazda DB 'Bubble' was a sedan available from 1990 to 1997.
It introduced the automatic in the Aussie 121 and is in two words or less, Ugly.

      The engine options where a 1.3l SOHC 16valve B3 and a 1.5l SOHC 16valve B5.

What i want to know is what is 'EGI'. Until i have a chance to pop the bonnet and have a look i have no clue. (Also i didn't think bubbles came in Funtop's but i have seen one)

For now I'm just going to give it a major service and drive it around and get a feel for things but it's good to toss around ideas as i can keep an open eye on bargains.

can a moderator please move this thread to the Engine/Drivetrain section... i am determined to shed light on the OEM possibilities of the B3 block rather than just doing a bland engine swap

          !Hola Santos!

me llamo Chris, vivo en Colonia, Alemana.
Mi coche es un 121 ´88 B3 con modificación EFI.

The legal hurdles you are describing are similar to the ones in Germany when modifying engines.

I am planning to modify my B3 as well (oversized pistons, increased displacement and 16V SOHC head.) whilst keeping the outer apperance original instead of upgrading to a B6 application (oversized pistons, increased displacement and 16V SOHC head.)

I think a good approach could be balancing the internals, deburr the head, welding baffles into the oil pan, use better valve springs and port work.

EGI is just another nomenclature for EFI -> ´electronic gasoline injection´ as far as I know.
And yes, the DB is ugly but it´s in the eye of the beholder.

          keep us updated.

            Tag Chris!
Gut, ein anderes mazda zu sehen, war Ihr, das in Korea oder in Japan hergestellt wurde?

Yeah i figured i do light head work, bigger valves.. i just not sure if i want NA or Forced induction. I think what will decide it is how cheap i can source a donor engine ( a B5 fell through on ebay). Either way it is going to have to wait as i have had my left hand mutilated in a freak accident and will have to wait for my tendons and nerves to heal from surgery but I'm going to take the time to do some research on cheap effective combo's (in theory at least)

As far as I know the 121DA was produced in Japan. Please correct me If I am wrong here. Maybe KIA did the final assembly for Mazda, I don´t know for sure

If you can have the turbo without law conflict I´d go for it since the part´s availability is fine and interchangeability between the Mazda engines/ devices is very good as well.

Search the archives of the Festiva mailing list and the many documentaries of accomplished engine swaps here on FF.com to get an overview and find the engine that suits your demands best.

German is OK, just needs some minimal fine tuning / un poco de calibración

yeah i had a feelin' all the 121's where Japanese... The badge jobs Korean

As for engine swaps i got to keep the same block for sleeper/stealth mods, been reading through the stuff and things like B6 and B3 having same crank is interesting as the turbo model was forged? If i use a B5 head i don't want to bore it larger than 75mm as the gaskets match up and if by freak chance it get's a defect requiring the head removed for inspection they less likely to realise it's overbored and probably won't realize it's stroked out

As for the deutsch i haven't had any willing Mädchen to teach me more for a couple of years
