  • Custom engine?

Hey all, first post, it's about a 93 festiva I'm working on. It ran rough, sounded like a Subaru, so I did a compression check, got 175, 150, 10, 110. pulled the head to find a few D shaped exhaust valves in what appears to be a 88 festiva head with HLA's on the shafts, but the pistons have appear to be from a 12 valve motor. The fuel injection looks just like the Haynes manuals pictures. What kind of build is this? Did someones experiment not work out, resulting in the valves burning? Thank you for any ideas!

There is no 12 valve B motor . You have the correct pistons. If you look at the intake ports on your head it will make sense. I know because I had asked this same question some time ago. When you say D shaped valves are you saying the valve heads are missing material to where they are not round? That would explain the 10 psi reading. Your best bet would be to look for a good running B6 engine to replace your worn B3. B3's are getting hard to find. B6 single cam engines are more plentiful and are pretty much plug and play plus you will pick up another 25 or so horse power over a B3. If you do a wiki search on Mazda engines it will tell you what cars came with which engines. Good luck!
'88 Festiva LX 5 speed, A/C, Carb, restored $$$ body paint, badly wrecked @ 200k.
'93 Festiva L, 5 speed, Aqua, bought from the original owner,.Zero rust but very nasty otherwise. Awaits the B6T.
'91 Festiva L, 5 speed, bought to drive while putting the B6T in the '93. now B6ME powered.

Hello Rick! So, it's possible what I'm working with here is an older festiva motor and head but they kept the hydraulic lifters and fuel injection? I will look for pictures of the festival pistons. I think you're right, but it just that I've never seen inside a festiva or aspire motor before.

Oh, yes, D shaped valves, meaning the valve face is no longer a circle. Edges burnt away

Rick was right about the pistons, they're stock. But would the fuel injected head have a spot to bolt on a mechanical fuel pump? This one does. And the rocker shafts have springs instead of sleeves, but HLA rockers. Guess it doesn't matter. Either I replace the three burned exhaust valves or I upgrade the engine.
