  • porting and polishing questions

i have my head off and cleaned on my B3 and i have ported the intake and exhaust a little bit.. how 'rough' should my intake be? i used a stone and was thinking about 150 grit for the intake and polish (400 grit) the exhaust.
    here are some pictures:
    Before cleaned:

    After cleaned, before porting:

    After a little of porting:

    Any suggestions or tips?

Just my two cents on port and polishing before you go on. There are a few schools of thought I know... I worked in the performance industry for a while and a engine guru once told me to be careful how much you you port and polish. The reason is that you want to maintain a bit of roughness so you can still have turbulence. A bit of turbulence equals better mixing with the atomized injected fuel and therefore more power. However polish that exhaust port right smooth, no need for turbulence there... as to grit numbers, I don't know off the top of my head. Maybe someone else can help.

don't be shy about knocking the shelf on the exhaust port down, there's plenty of meat to be taken from there. best thing you can do is gasket match, but your manifolds must be done in hte same manner for it to work properly. and don't worry about the sleeves, in that case you'd actually want to ADD material to help transition the flow around.

I used a dremal for most of it, also a small cylinder hone and a high speed drill (like a giant dremal)....and a lot of patience

i bought a variable speed dremel (8000 to 25000 rpm)... worked great... really, under small load it is slower (3000 rpm)....
