  • 4speed to 5speed swap?

    How direct of a swap in a E5MR into a E4MR Festiva?

What else is needed other than just the trans itself?

It is a completely direct bolt in swap. If the 5-speed transmission is coming out of a festiva, it will fit like you were just putting the old transmission back in. They look identical. This is the easiest transmission upgrade.

That is true for most 4-speed transmissions, but there are some 89 l plus with 5-speed.

1990 and newer festivas had 5-speed transmissions. There are alot of 88 L plus out there that have 5-speed transmission also.

Next time, scitzz1, make sure you don't have any undefined antecedents. "they" is an undefined antecedent because it is undefined to us what "they" refers to. Unless you were referring to festivas. They came out of the Kia plant across the Pacific ocean, and they improve your gas mileage and your ability to pick up chicks. 8)

I have the swap from 4 to 5 spd in one of my 89 festivas, the one I call Shtinky. The only change is that you have only one sensor instead of two on the trans. The other was for that annoying "shift" light the L had in the std instrument cluster. I also have a 5 spd in an 88LX. All LX that I have seen came with the 5 spd.
The difference is that you get a second overdrive with the 5 sp, vs just overdrive/4th gear. (yeah, guys, if you check the diff ratio, 4th is really better than a 1:1 ratio) When I read that on the window sticker, I thought they must be joking at first.
