I've found a Festiva for $200 but it needs a head gasket. Does this mean the car can't be driven at all?

that depends. if its really bad then no, but if its just a small leak then you might could go a few miles with it.89 L, hopefully returning from the dead soon with a little more power...

i got my festy for $100 w/ head problems... re-did the head the first time and not the valves, and now i am doing it again with new piston rings, valves, valve springs, port and polish.... can't wait to get 'er back on the road.
as geezerstiva said, depends.... be sure to watch your temp gauge... if it gets past the middle, turn it off and wait for it to cool down..
if it is not getting compression, then no, it likely won't start. if it does it'll be rough. what is the color of the exhaust smoke? if its white, you are likely getting water into the chamber.
