  • head work

Hey guys ive got a new 1.3L cylinder head on the way and im just getting parts 2getha for the installation, and i have afew queries.

I have bought a FMS comp cam, and was wondering if there are any adjustable cam gears out there. I want to/need to fiddle with the timing and was wondering whats avaliable, a B6 sohc one possibly?

I will be doing a port n polish and also shaving the head. After some quick claculations i came up with the following

    Shaved------------CR
    0.01"---------------9.975:1
    0.02"---------------10.25:1
    0.03"---------------10.525:1
    0.04"---------------10.8:1

I was hoping to go for the 0.03" off the top, but wnated to see if i can go for the 0.04" and if any of you have a recommendation

Also should i be looking at differnt valve springs or valves, are there any aftermarket parts of this sorta application.

I would like all of your opinions, as i want to make sure i get everything right and make informed decisions.

    Thanks

I'd do .030 that puts you right at the minimal thickness in spec of the head. Might wanna deck the block instead. But i doubt you slap piston to valve at .040.

agree... 0.040 is a little much... i did 0.020 on mine (my head isn't installed yet though)

I dont think so becasue the advantage of a DOHC is that you can adjust the intake & exhaust sepratly. SOHC can not.
You would advance the cam gear to help the intake side of things but the exhaust valves would open prior extracting the most power from the bang.

what about jessle belt systems for SBCs? they're single cam and adjustable...

i have (and qwaddawg too) an adjustable cam gear for the SOHC B6/3 head. you COULD take one cam gear from the DOHC BP kits out there and use it but they're kinda expensive. then again you could also split the cost with someone who wants the same thing (each of you getting one adjustable gear)

Muscle... there's no disadvantage to using an adjustable gear for single cam engines. advancing the cam will tend to bring the powerband down in RPMs (peak at 4500 instead of 5200), and retarding the cam tends to push the powerband higher in the RPMs (peak at 5800 instead of 5200). also using the gear to correct for head/block shaving (retaining actual 0* cam timing) is another good idea.

What cam gear are you using FestYboy, got a brand or a link to them? I dont know any1 else over here thats modifying otherwise the BP DOHC gear would be a good idea

I wanted to avoid having to shave the block as its just extra time and money, when it would be easier to just shave the head less. This is my daily car and my only car, so once all the work is done it needs to be assembeled and running in afew days, i dont have alot of time to have it off the road.

Thanks for the comments so far, any1 got some insight into the valve springs?

Over here (Australia) we have a 8-valve and a 16-valve version of the B3 engine. Is there anything you guys can tell me about them, or were they not avaliable over there?? Would be worth a look, but then the FMS cam woudnt work with the extra valves
