  • Short shifter install

I said I would, so here is My lame little write-up on installing a
98-01 ACURA INTEGRA JDM CHROME SHORT SHIFTER in a Festiva

First you need to remove is the bolt liking the shift lever to the shift rod. It is found under the car in the tunnel the exhaust runs down. Remove the 12mm nut and pull out the bolt, pull hard it can be stubborn. Now you need to remove the shift boot. If you have the full console this means removing the console. If not, just twist off the shift handle and pull the boot off. There is a rubber seal around the base of the shift lever, pull that up and off. Now you are probably looking at a greasy mess. If you wipe some of that muck off you will see the top of the retainer spring. The very end of the top coil has a spot to stick a screwdriver so you can pry the top coil towards to shift lever shaft. The spring should pop out. Now grab the shift lever and give it a good sharp tug up. This should pull the whole assembly up and out of the housing. There will be a thin white bushing on top of the ball, a thicker white bushing on the bottom of the ball and a dust seal and boot below that. Remove the top bushing by lifting it off the shaft. The bottom bushing has a split on the side so you can remove it by spreading it out. And the boot you will need to work off over the tube at the bottom of the lever that the bolt ran thru, careful now, its old. Get all the parts good and clean, and remove all old grease. Give all parts a nice coat of grease except the spring and install on the new shifter in the same order it came off the old one. Drop it in, boot down, pressing lightly to seat the bottom seal. Place the spring on the shaft. Press down until you can wedge the top coil under the lip of the housing. The short shifter ball is larger than the stock ball so I had to press the second coil down with a flat head screwdriver to give it room to seat. Push a little grease into the spring, reinstall the top seal and shift boot. Get back under the car. My kit came with a bolt but it was too short so had to get a longer one at the hardware store for .90. Torque to spec, and enjoy the ride!

Well I did mine yesterday. It took me all of 15 minutes to install. Because the ball on the short shifter is bigger as stated above I was having a little trouble with the spring. I cut the bottom coil (one) from the spring and it went right in nice and tight. The shifter tilted forword alot (2nd,4th and R are in the staight up position) so like I read in another short shifter thread I cut about 1/4 in. out of the shift rod. This helped but I need to cut a little more to get it where I like it. I bought one of the blue short shifters on ebay it was like 4.99 + 8.99 shipping or somthing like that. The part that bolts the shift rod to the shifter is a little different but with a different bolt and a couple washers it works great. I would suggest everyone go this route for a short shifter as it was cheap and easy.

I bought a correct short shifter that actually fits the Festiva (1st Generation Probe - I believe 88-92) and it installed without modifying anything.

            Wow...

This might sound stupid, but I can't find a short shifter for a 1st gen probe. All the one's I've seen are for the second gen. You think that would work?

                Probably not.

                88-92 Probe - Part #01-0620

It's the same for the 323 and MX6, 626 too...

Just talked to pacesetter and all there short shifter kits have been discontinued. Besides the last price they had listed for one was $110.00. I payed under $20 with little mod. that realy wasnt nessesary but I wanted to do it anyway. I think the Acura kit is the best way to do a short shift on a budget.

Be careful with those eBay shifters. Some members have had them break quite easily and left them stranded. I had one that I bench tested in the vise and it broke with very little pressure. I purchase one with a better/stronger design, but have yet to install it.

                        shifter ball upper bushing

                        Hey gang,

Got a question about the orientation of the white upper ball bushing. I bought one of those cheap stainless steel shifters(Civic) off of ebay. It was listed as forged, but I highly doubt it(I think more like cast) Pulled the whole stock sha-bang bang out without noticing how the upper white bushing was installed.

The top of the bushing is ovalled and I was wondering if it is installed east/west or north/south? I currently have the enlongated oval in the east/west orientation, thinking it would allow for the left to right shifter swing. Is this correct?

Also, spent a good hour or so trying to get that spring in. Kept cutting down the spring half coil at a time until it finally fit. It's now basically just a retaining clip(single wire loop), no spring action. Even that was a chore to seat in the groove!
