    B6

So do the B6 swap and use some motorcycle carbs to replace the B3 carb.
that way you don't need to bother with the EFI.

of course this will require a little fabrication, but matched with a nice little cam and header it should move out smartly.

If you use the first gen 323 b6 (88-89?) the Festiva intake manifold WITH carb will bolt right on. I would imagine the carb would flow just fine. Really, it *should* be very simple. I would just continue to use the Festiva B3 ECU. You'll need to add the Festiva mechanical fuel pump or a low pressure electric (3-5 lbs). I can't think of anything else.

You read my mind. I was going to ask if I could re-use the intake setup to get it up and running and then go from there. So the iginition parts are basically the same and plug right in?

Forgive my ignorance, but does the B6 motor bolt-in place of the B3, or does this motor need custom mounts fabbed for it?

That's all I need is more projects.

        Thanks

The B6 bolts right in, no mods required.

for simple changeover to carb, you need the early B6, though. The head is different on the later ones. I can't remember the years exactly, but mine's a 92 and the later style.

I believe 1990 was the changeover year for B6 engines. 1991 for sure.

Also, as a matter of interest, I found that the valve cover bolts on Festivas (I have an '89 and a '93) do not interchange with the later B6 engines. I snapped a valve cover bolt when reinstalling my cover, and had to get a new one. The Festiva bolts won't work, as they use a spacer and the bolt head flanges are too wide. The length may not be right either. I went looking...

I found the older B6 engines have the same style valve cover bolts as the Festivas--using that spacer. I think this may be the sign not only of a newer bolt or valve cover style--but of the newer head style as well. (Can anyone confirm this?)

Before I found a newer B6 to get a valve cover bolt off of, I looked at an Aspire. It had the same type of valve cover bolt I needed for my '94 B6!

Unfortunately, I didn't see the year of that Aspire.

My guess is that Mazda later changed the style of it's B3 heads to match the newer B6 heads--thus the similarity of that Aspire valve cover bolt to the later B6. It could have happened in the '94 model year upon the introduction of the Aspire model.

              The implications..?

Again, I'm no mechanic, but I would guess that the later head and intake manifold design used in nineties 323s was finally given to the Aspires as well, probably from their first year ('94).

If so, just as you could simply bolt the FI Festiva intake onto the early ('86-'89 323s and Tracers) when you do your B6 swap, you could also simply bolt on your '94 to '95 (OBD 1, remember!) FI Aspire intake to the later model B6.

              Can anyone confirm?

If so, this would keep the "over the valve cover" routing of the air box plumbing the same as the Aspire, for a slightly simpler swap.

(Then again, those bolt changes may only indicate a commonality of valve covers.)
