  • air filter/induction upgrade on stock 1.3 engine

How do I go about upgrading the stock air intake in the 1.3 engine 1992 festiva?

I thought about a cone shape performance filter but, how to apply it to the existing setup?

    Can you say duct-tape?

I remember seeing a post about that a while back. Search for "CAI". Should turn up something.

EDIT: Strike that. Doesn't find a thing.
Any difference that makes no difference is no difference.

ive heard that you have to keep the air flow sensor levle or it gives wrong readings. i dont know if im right, but it makes sence in my head.

You can custom order a K&N panel filter that fits the stock air box perfectly. I got mine from O'Reilley's 2 years ago for about $40 + shipping. Took a week to get. I used the factory air box and cut a hole in the side of the box that faces the engine/grill. I then found a factory plastic round to square 45 degree transition elbow and epoxied it into the hole I cut in the air box. It ends up pointing directly at the wide-open grill opening. You could go a step farther and install a short piece of ducting from under the bumper or the passenger's side of the grill directly to the side of the air box. Cheap, easy (working with plastic) and looks factory! The plastic tube between the air box and throttle body is a little restrictive, but a 1.3L doesn't require a lot of air (guessing around 200 CFM @ 5000RPM).
The "elbow" I used was actually off of a mid-80's Ford car. It was used to connect the round ducting that goes from the inner fender well to the rectangular snorkel on the air cleaner. If you look around some salvage yards you'll find something that will work.
These cars don't generate a lot of under hood heat, and with the wide open front area behind the grill, I suspect there is an abundance of cool, high pressure air in front of the engine. Probably more than in the wheel well.

                    Australian intake

I bought the intake and carbs off of eBay.au for cheap.
I had them ocean shipped to me, because I'm cheap.
I bought my Festiva on eBay for $248 from a guy in Detroit.

The manifold doesn't quite line up with the ports and water, so I had an adapter made from a 1" thick aluminum offcut that I bought at the Metal Supermarket. That's O.K. since the intake is about an inch shorter than the original Festiva manifold. I still have 6" between the stud and the fire wall.

Here are some pictures of it before I took off the EGR valve and plugged the holes:

I'll take the adapter off another day and take a picture of it.

Unfortumately, I had to take off my mechanical fuel pump because of interference.
I will have to install an electric pump instead.
A blocl off plate is being made.

How do you like my Mazdaspeed oil cap?
It's machined from aluminum billet and anodized.

I am currently looking for some 60mm air filters.

Looks to me like the factory twin carb setup from a KB laser 1.5lt. Some mazda 323's from the same era had them as well. They were fitted to S packs, I think S standing for sports. They are not common but not that rare either. I can't think of the engine designation but they are a fair bit different to the B series. There was a mob over here in Aus that made a twin sidedraft manifild for the B series, I think it was lynx from memory.

                              where from

I was told that these carbies were fitted as optional to 240K, 260K, 280Z, and I think standard to 200B SX, and 180B SSS.

Here's a side view of the adapter I had made:

I also made the red paint for the exhaust and valve cover myself.
I dispersed an inorganic cadmium pigment from Ferro in a ultra high heat alkyd resin.
Too bad I dropped the valve cover a few times on the concrete before I finally screwed it on. It will stay bright red and not darken like those cheap, non-toxic, organic, toluidene red pigments you buy at any store.
