  • Throttle body

I have a BPT throttle body that i want to replce my current B3 throttle body

I searched and read the ohter topic on the swap.

Now from what i can see, by comparing the BPT TB to the B3 gasket that i have, the airpace around the two throttle bodys are totally differnt. Apart from boring out the intake manifold are there any other mods required for this swap? Who has actually mangaed to do it, and does any1 have pics that i can see?

    Thanks
    -Jared

I put a '91 Protege 5 speed TB (the B8 engine--1.8L SOHC 16 valve) on my B6 (1.6 SOHC) to match my automatic's TPS plug pins. It was 5mm larger diameter, so I hogged out my B6 air plenum intake hole to better fit the larger TB.

I wasn't aware that you could put a BP or BPT TB on a B3. I think maybe an older B6 TB could work, but you'd have to try it.

My guess is the "air pipe over the top" engines (B3 and early B6) may have different mounting sizes than the "air pipe around to the side" later style engines. I could be wrong though!

Ah, I see you're in Oz, so maybe your TBs are different there!

^ karl, B3/B6 TB's are almost exactly interchangeable, but they have the same size throat... i have a B3 TB on my B6 just b/c i had an extra one and i didn't have a B6 TB. The only thing you have to do is cut the coolant line hookups off of the B3 TB and plug them (i used JBweld). But theres no performance reason to do this.

I read on mazda323performance.com a while ago that some folks have put the BP (60 or 65mm ?) TB on their NA B6's... it seems that over the VC or to the side intake mani doesn't make much of a difference and they are still swappable, but i haven't done it myself.

Jared - since your in OZ, could you post a picture of your TB and your intake manifold? it might help us over here in the states see exactly which TB your talking about, since we never actually got the BPT here. If its the same as the BP TB, then i think all you will have to do is hog out the intake mani and make sure your coolant lines will hook up, and that should be it!

Nate, so there's no difference between early and later B6 TBs? Just the coolant line differences?

            Could be good to know.

^^ You guys, there is defiantly a difference between the older/newer style. The newer style, like my B6 has the IAC Built into the throttle body. (on the bottom) Even if the passages/mounting was the same, the valve cover would probably be in the way if you tried to put the newer style on the older.

Stefan, that's what I was thinking (though not in as much detail).

guess you can't believe everything you read

thanks stefan! I know the over the VC B6 TB switches w/ the B3, and i though the ones that went to the side did too, but obviously not!

Here are the pics guys. You can see the BPT TB and the B3 Gasket side by side. The coolant/air lines dont line up by the looks, but im not sure exactly what purpose they serve anyway, or what the lower pipe with a bend in it actually connects to

Idea behind it is i have just done on my B3 a Port n Polish, FMS cam, adjustable cam gear, apexi power intake kit and fuel upgrades, so im just looking into a bigger TB to help the new polished intake manifold. The more flow i can get into the engine the better, is how i see it.
