  • $10 high flow air filter

take your old worn out air filter and turn it in to a new high flow air filter.

take yor old air filter and tear off all the paper and throw it away. now you are left with a metal screen and rubber seal/ border, like so:

next find a pice of foam that is high flow enough for the job. i used a old kfx 400 one.

cut it to look like this:

now start to zap strap or sew the foam to the screen. ( if you cut the zap straps at a angle it is easier to poke through the foam.)

once you are all done with the zap straps throw some tape around the edges like this:

and for the final step, drill out the rivets and pull off that thing on the side of the box, like this:

now you have a air filter that would make K&N drool ....... lol i hope this helps some people ( im shure it won't lol)

as long as you realize and don't mind that its not going to filter nearly as well as a stock filter (those things are usually "wraps" for a paper filter), cool!

I would deff recomend oiling it though, if you haven't... the oil is what actually catches dirt on filters like K&N or most foam/cotton filters.

also, you can get a cone filter with VAF adapter on ebay for around $10, just as another option.

hey, use the foam filter that you get in a canister vacumn, they catch lots of small dirt and crap

that is pretty redneck though but it's cool at the same time!! but for better air i'd rather use a cone filter

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

I'm with NovaSS on this. I took out my filter 2yrs ago on my '88 carb and it still runs strong. 41mpg with about 25-30K since air filter removal. Sounds dumb but no probs yet.

I'm curious to see the $10 filter & cone adapter, does anyone have a pic? Do you need to relocate the airbox? This is one of the mods i'm planning next...
