  • Installed 5 speed with Phantom Grip LSD, plus some other updates

Couldn't figure out which forum to put this in.. mod can move it if they like..

Got THIS from UPS the other day...

    NICE SHIPPING CRATE!!!:

Ah... so nice.. 5 speed, rebuilt, with Phantom Grip installed already!! What a bargain.. THANKS for the deal Fastiva604 !!!!

Man, Talk about light in the rear end.. went to jack her up for the tranny swap... Check this out.. ONE jack stand in the FRONT!! Talk about stiff!!!

Got the tranny all installed.. Turn one front wheel, and the other turns the same direction! Yeah! A first for any of MY Festys... Time will tell, and I will report how it works on the Autocross track... I bet the Phantom Grip will be plenty OK for this light little car... did a small burnout in the driveway and BOTH tires spun... Yeah!!!

I also painted the cage silver to match the stripe and my numbers/logos..

Also did an expanded steel grill treatment, and painted the front black.. looks kinda mean, don't it? LOL..

    beaters FTW!!!

Have had 6 Festys... and counting...

        Well then... thank YOU too!!

Brian, I haven't had it out with this trans, but I have had it around the block a few times before that.. It's LIGHT and QUICK.. and also it stops SUPER fast!! Should be great for Autocross, if I haven't upset the balance too much..

Now I am thinking about tossing some small lights back on it, and driving it on the street!! Also, since I have coilovers, I thought about getting some bigger tires, jacking her up, and using it for off-road... LOL.... could be fun!!

hey how do those tires work for u? i use to work at a place were we raced first gen rx7'sin scca and nasa events. we tried a lot of different types of tires from MT, to toyo, and even Hoosier, and the best by far were the Hankook's u can get them in different softness but the best always seemed to be the 51's or 71's, just a suggestion

Nah, those are full on road race slicks... no comparison to ANY street tire. IMO, the only thing better are full on Autocross compound, like A6 hoosier, or some Kumhos... super sticky, get heat fast and shed it fast.

Not sure what Hankooks you are talking about though... Not sure they would be available in 13"??? that is the main problem. Tire size, I need 20" to 21.5" tall rubber, no more, no less... in 13"... I could go to 14" but don't want to, as wheels are expensive too, and I run stock Festy size lug pattern

My tires are great for hot summer, but when it gets colder I switch to some CSR application Hoosiers in R25 compound... those are the tires I had on when I rolled it... TOO sticky.. The R45 cantelievered rubber I have on right now takes a little to get heat in them, but when they do get hot... watch out... you can hear them gripping the asphalt... lol..

Ideally, I would run Hoosier A6's, but I can't afford them twice a year... LOL...

we just never had any luck with the hoosiers, but also we were running a RWD car and higher speeds so all that comes into effect, and on or 3rd gen prototype cars we always ran the toyo's except some times we tried out the Nitto's

It's all about getting them in 13" almost NOTHING is available in that size.. I have about 2 or 3 tires to choose from, if I don't use full road race Hoosiers...

Don't forget, I am FWD... but mostly, I weigh less than 1500 lbs... (more like 1300 now..) so that changes EVERYTHING... Formula Ford tires, CSR tires... and vintage sports car road race tires is about all I can use..

I can use Kumho v710's but they are a little tall for me.. Silver bullet has GREAT results with them..

Me, I prefer Hoosier A6's... those two tires win EVERYTHING in Autocross these days..

true, forgot about the 13, so yeah lets get this thread back on track, talking about the transmissions, how is the 4 speed compared to the 5, is it completely different gear ratio's? or is the 4 basically the 5 without the 5th gear?

It's the same ratios. Just has a 5th added. I don't really need a 5 speed for autocross.. but if I ever road race it, I'll need it..

I might actually drive this on the street too (that would be fun) if I put some lights back on it.. and the 5th gear would come in REAL handy... as this car is really taching out at 105mph......

Right, what Artie said. I haven't had a 5 speed in the car since it's been just an Autox car.. I did 105 in 4th, on GPS.. but it was close to redline.. still felt like it would pull though.. if I had had another cog to go to...

I am really hoping to do some engine work (head/cam,etc...) this winter... but I have a LOT of projects going.. time will tell.

It puts out about 90 horse to the tires, according to a dyno run... would love to get it to 125, but I might be dreaming.. might have to go BP.. I don't want to turbo it.. turbos and autocross aren't always the best mix
