Too bad it's all the way in CA. I've been trying to buy a festy for a while for an EV conversion. The thing about the range is that it can be doubled by putting some more/better batteries in it. My uncle builds electric planes so with some LiPo (lithium polymer) batteries you'd be able to hold a greater charge with less weight.
Seems like the motor hes using might not be all that hot either, but the Festiva is such a great platform for an EV because it's SO light and has so much room. Even with a 30mile range, most commuters don't drive that far in a day. Keep in mind the Chevy Volt is supposed to cost nearly $40k and still only has a 40 mile range!
But even if you commute 40 miles a day to work (like I do) if you plugged it in when you got there, the car would be charged and ready to go by the time you drive home.
