  • ECU question

I have an 89 Auto with the oddball EFI system.

I want to put a B6 in eventually, but I heard that the 89's ECU is different and possibly incompatible with a B6 ECU.

Is this true? Would the B3 ECU work fine or will I have power/MPG problems?

    Regards,

    Tim

umm... i think you have problems if you run any b3 ECU with a b6. at least thats what i've heard.
89 L, hopefully returning from the dead soon with a little more power...

does your ecu have 3 plugs or 2?
I have a few for the b6 with 3 plugs that i think are auto ecu's.

Tim I just had this conversation with FB71. He said to do the swap useing the B6 with the B6 inlectors and VAF but leave all the wiring and ECU from the 89 B3 in place with the dist. from the B3.

            Just a quick question...

The part #s for the early B6 and '89 B3 VAFs are the same, according to a few parts websites.

This leads me to believe the VAFs are the same between the two cars, but you and FB71 seem to say they are different animals. Can you clarify for me?

just did the b6 swap and you don't wanna run the b3 ecu on b6 motor.... unless... and this is just from what I've read. you change your injectors over as well. but you shouldn't have a problem festivas should all have the 2 plug ecu's auto or standard.... mines auto and had the 2 plugs. and then the b6 motors have 3 for the auto. and you have to change the throttle body to a manual one as well I believe.

^^This swap is when useing the 89 auto EFI only
Tim I was told when doing this swap on an 89 EFI use the VAF that goes with the engine you use.

Tim, if the part# is the same, then you can use it. I wasn't aware the early B6 VAF was the same part#.
