is there any way to take off the VAF on a festiva and still have the motor run proper? the reason i ask is that i may be getting some itb's off of a gsxr 1000 that i found on CL, but if i cant take out the VAF then i dont think ill buy them. the only thing that i can think of that will give me more hp is sticking on a VAF from a rx7 (bigger and more flow). but if i could take it right out, that would be even better. anyone have any answers?

you have to run a standalone EFI system that doesn't look for an airflow volume or mass input. You cannot delete the VAF from the stock EFI system successfully.

I doubt the stock ecu is calibrated for a larger vam. Best bet is megasquirt with speed density.

you will most likely need a standalone to run itb's anyway.

you can eliminate the VAF using a piggyback like Emanage, or SAFC with a MAP sensor and some good tuning for people who cant afford a full standalone.

theres an article on how-to on turbo-miata.com if i remember correctly.

Ideal you forgot to mention MEGASQUIRT! A standalone for the bluecollar worker. I am still working on mine, it is really not that bad once you get into it, but look at spending some money. I know a guy that can build you a plug and play system for the BP motor if your interested (about $600).

for the money it would take to make this work, it would be pointless cause im swaping my motor to a bp some time soon..... hopfuly....... i think ill leave it alone for a bit, maby if i get some money to mess around with, ill do it.

heck you can do the megasquirt now, and when you go to the BP it will swap right over with some tuning. But of course when you start changing stuff like this you make the car less predictable and possibly less reliable.

no I just mean anytime you modify a car, start adding non OEM parts, change the engineering on something that was meant to be one way.

Of course this doesn't go for all of us, but your typical shadytree mechanic like me, I like to test stuff for a long time before I trust it.
