  • Lightened Flywheel ???

I have a quick question. So a stock Festiva flywheel is 20lbs and a FMS flywheel is 16lbs would a 13lbs flywheel be better or worse? Im talking for a non street legal racecar. Looking for your opinions.

it would rev faster but not have as much torque.

Thats it? I was thinking maybe it wouldnt run well at idle or something what do you think about that. Im not realy worried about loosing some torque because the car only weighs somewere around 1500lbs

no it won't effect idle at all it will just rev faster (easier)

ya if you buy a lighter flywheel you will notice the difference for sure, esspecially if your dropping 7 or 9 lbs.

I stand corrected. I could have swore I read 16lbs somewhere. Anyway I dont think we will take anymore off this one. I have others to play with and Im going to try different weights. Thanks for the comments and info.

11lbs....is nice. Fast revs with a motor swap. A lightened flywheel will not add more hp/tq, nor take any away...

I thought the stock flywheel weight was more like 17 or 18 pounds?

Some folks have expressed doubt about the longevity of over-lightened flywheels.

I'm thinking I'll go with lightening mine no more than five pounds.

Yea after checking a stock one on my bathroom scale it weighed 18lbs so I removed 5lbs. I dropped it off to be ballanced today. I let you know what I think once I get it in. We will be starting on another one soon. It will be lighter than 13lbs. And when I put the 13lbs one in then I will have another one to play with too so we will have 3 different weights. About the longevity thing at 13lbs there is still alot of steel left there so I dont think it will be a problem. As we go lighter with others we will see. It is a Race car so it will be tested off of city streets and If I blow one up than we will know there limit.lol

question.... how do you shave weight off your fly wheel? do you need a trueing system like for valves or do you just take it somewhere?

We did it on a brake lathe. Or you could have a machine shop do it but labor isnt cheap.
