  • XR2 jackshaft longer than the EGT/Protege LX?

so I am having all kinds of issues with axles on my bp swap, and the capri axle is too short on the passenger side. I am wondering if the capri midshaft is longer than the BP cars? its about 1-1/2 inches too short. I am using an EGT midshaft on my aspire because its wider than the festiva so I figured it would be longer.

the aspire is the same width as a festiva, the control arms are the same and you can swap swaybars and all, its the body that is wider. i had one but i rolled it i loved that car. and yes you have to use the caprixr2 or 323gt midshaft. Egt shaft is shorter because it has longer cv shafts. i lenghthened an egt midshaft to work but it broke after a year. i designed it with a flaw.

Aspire control arms are about 1/2" longer than a festiva's. When I did my first bp swap I somehow placed the engine too far to the left, so to keep the axle from binding I swapped my lf ctrl arm with an aspire one until i had time to remount. Track down a capri xr2 midshaft and use capri axles or get creative.

dang that's a sad pic to see man. I am going to widen my stance some, about 3/4" on both sides to get the length I need to use the EGT axles and IM shaft. I'm welding steel plate to reinforce the unibody and then I am going to move the control arms out further. I'm engineering the materials and weld lengths, its nice to be able to use my engineering degree for something! lol

geezum it looks like the XR2 setup is longer than the EGT setup. wow.

my passenger side reinforcement is done and it did the trick, I am just hoping the sway bar doesn't mind being widened about 1-1/2"

How are you going to widen the sway bar?

very very carefully, or I may try and use a tempo/escort sway bar (80's escort)

if the capri axles are to short why couldnt you use festva lower control arms since there shorter than the aspire ones

i really didn't think of that, I have one lying around, but I need it done by the end of the month or my dad said he was going to tow it to the junkyard himself. so i'm just slapping the stock trans out of my 96 in there.

I may try and mock up EGT or the like LCA's on the looted carcas of the 96 after I part it out.

xr2 axles/midshaft are the perfect length when using stock festiva lca's. If you use these parts and still have issues, either your engine/trans is mounted offcenter, or the inner joint is assembled wrong. You can take apart the inner joint and flip the carrier on the splined shaft to shorten or lengthen because it is offset a little bit. I know this because when I rebuild one of my axles I put it together backwards and it made it longer or shorter ( I can't remember, long time ago).
