You could install a cold air kit onto your ride. You would need to relocate the air filter to someplace where it is outside of the engine compartment where it can get outside colder air(don't just leave it in the engine compartment - hot air doesn't make power!!). To back it up and take advantage of it, I would adjust your ignition timing 4-5 degrees advanced. This should help out with the power production. This shouldn't cost more than $50-60 if done right.Fast, fun and good gas mileage. 91' Festiva(RIP) and 96' Aspire(RIP). The website is no more.

Maybe you won't pull 10 hp from a CAI and a ignition advance, but I bet you pull at least 5-8 and also smooth out some of the surges that can be felt in the b3 powerband. I can tell you that the b3 likes ignition advance. Not everyone wants to or can afford to do an engine swap Simon. Some people just want that little bit more that can be had with some real world tuning and modification. Each engine in it's own aspect is decent but not everyone needs an engine swap. It's ALOT of work and alot of people hate the idea of changing an air filter little alone a whole engine.Fast, fun and good gas mileage. 91' Festiva(RIP) and 96' Aspire(RIP). The website is no more.

Just do the normal tune-up stuff, Air filter, oil, tranny fluids... Just even the normal maintenance will give you a much better revving/driving Festy. I don't know about 10hp but def. a noticeable bit! -KyleCosmic Blue 2008 Mazdaspeed 3 - Mostly Stock...

Yeah you are talking about a 17% increase in power trying to gain 10 hp on a stock b3. You would need to do a full exhaust with a header. A cold air intake. and you might get 5 horse out of it. Or you could pull the head and port it up a bit and mill for compression. and even put a cam in it if you want to and you might see 15-17 horse out of that and spend quite a bit of coin in the process. A junkyard b6 with ECU shouldn't cost over $300, is a direct bolt in, is worth 20-25 horse, and is far easier than removing and porting a head for the average person.

Please check my previous post. As I mentioned before. Most people don't want to tear thier engine out of thier car. Some people that buy festiva's, just want a bit more zip or just somthing that will make it over the hill without struggling with it. Not everyone on here NEEDS a engine swap. Try as I may, I couldn't help but understand what some people bought the Festiva for - ECONOMY. There is nothing wrong with just wanting to drive the wheels off of your car and wanting just a bit more out of it. Simple mods like a CAI and advancing your timing WILL MAKE POWER. Just as a footnote - a full exhaust on the festiva might make 2 horsepower but it will drop torque into the toilet and where'd the gas mileage go? The exhaust on the Festiva is MORE than enough for a stock engine. The 1.3l NEEDS backpressure. Maybe if you ported the head, built the engine and turbo'd it maybe a exhaust would be beneficial. Notice I didn't suggest anything to do with the exhaust?Fast, fun and good gas mileage. 91' Festiva(RIP) and 96' Aspire(RIP). The website is no more.

umm...i guess you have'nt been paying attn.
the b6 gets the same fuel econ as a b3 if driven similarly......and swapping the b6 in is a joke of a swap. can be done in 5 hours.
advancing the timing on ANY engine will require you to run higher octane fuel. On the B3 you MIGHT see a 3whp gain max. If you are willing to spend 20 cents more per gallon then go for it. If you neglect to increase the octane after advancing the timing..u'll mess up the motor in no time flat, up to u.
As for intake, get a K&N drop in. IMO its better to keep stock airbox & increase airflow than to have an exposed cone filter in the hot engine bay. Most K&N drop ins are dyno proven to increase 2-10whp...on a festiva, probably 2 since its only pushing 55whp stock.Wil

No, apparantly YOU haven't  . MOST PEOPLE ON EARTH DON"T WANT TO PULL THE ENGINE OUT OF THIER CAR(Man I feel like I said this a few times already...). We the few that have the time, money - THE TOOLS and the desire to can and will. That is why there is so many 'ricers' out there. You know the kids with a CAI and a FART CAN. Anyone can install one or the other.
But for someone who DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO DO THIS ON THIER OWN they will have to pay a shop to do it for them. Last time I checked a shop with a concience - a engine swap would run about $700. Not to mention they would most likely have to have a yard that pulls for them a good used engine that would probably run them $300 removed from a car. Well, were over $1000 already. For 25 hp extra so this guy can say "wow, I still ain't gonna beat a 'ricer'." Now for you or me, Sure the $100 junkyard engine or the used car we pull the block from isn't gonna set us back at all. It's dumb if we don't.
But lets get real for a minute. Are you gonna go drop a B6 into someones car every time they say "I want more power under the hood of my festiva"? How about after it is in and you pat yourself on the back and head home. The guy calls you the next day and says somthing like, it doesn't run right, can you fix it? Well after the first 2 or 3 calls - you get the idea?
There are people that buy cars that want to just drive them  . These are the people you see going to garages and dropping $300 on a brake job because thier mechanic says they need it. Besides, this kid wasn't looking to drop a huge amount of money. If you don't understand what he is looking to do please read it again -

I don't think this kid wants to rip his engine out of his car and drop in a B6, probably can't afford to have the car down for any sort of time and in general probably doesn't have the dough to do a swap. So why suggest it? A engine swap is not cheap in any way. There are always small things you should do to the engine when you swap it  , like the rear main seal, probably change the clutch while it is out and in general gaskets, hoses fluids. It all adds up. Probably got $100 wrapped up in fluids and gaskets alone.
From the time people started modding engines, the BASICS started with a air filter and a ignition bump. Because it works! So what if it only nets 3 hp for the ignition bump - IT WAS FREE TO DO  ! the CAI for $50 that (If you read I said get it out of the engine compartment) if is located properly should net at least 2-5 ponies.

seriously, not everyone can do a b6 swap. My car was down for a week when I did mine because I had to track down a bunch of small problems that kept coming up. While I do agree that it is a pretty easy swap, the 5 hours is a little misleading. Someone who knows what they are doing and has all the prep work done can do it in 5 hours.OX SMASH!!

^^
Dear god do not buy that. It is a resistor. All it does is mess with the signal to the ECU which then gives the wrong fuel map. You MIGHT see 1-2hp increase. You also might run lean and damage something.
If you really want to try something like that, go to radio shack and buy the same resistor for $0.17OX SMASH!!

cheap
hey Speed costs money, how fast can you go. I think it's better to level with someone who asks this type of question and give a proven route,(B6swap) then to blow sunshine up someones ass and state unverified HP improvements. Yes a CAI will increase hp, but it is a percentage of hp the engine already makes. ie the stock engine makes 68hp a cold air intake improves hp 1% per every 10deg drop in temp. granted that is the hp being made by a B3 in perfect condition under ideal conditions, and it is at the flywheel. most b3's running around in festys have upwards of 100K miles do you honestly think you are making even the 68 stock hp? not likely. So if we use a CAI and get the average temp down say 10deg from the rest of the air, you Might on a good cool day be making 6hp. Whoopee. Just so you know the average person can only detect about a 7 hp change through the old butt dyno, so what are you getting for your $50 intake? Granted it's cheap and it might make the guy feel better, but really it's better to just be honest with the guy and tell him the answer to his question is no, there are no easy or cheap ways to make power with the b3 pure and simple.
No amount of wishful thinking is going to make it different. That's the reason that Simon and Wil and myself and others give the response they do in suggesting that the guy do an engine swap, because in our experience monkeying with the b3 is a waste of time. There is no replacement for displacement. About the only thing you could do to the B3 to make it put out more would likely be a small nitrous kit, but even the cheap ones are in the $500 dollar range, and with that amount you can do a B6 swap. Quite frankly, also tired of people stating they don't have the time or skills either, you can rent an engine hoist and pretty much all the other tools for this swap are available in a starter tool kit from sears. Swapping an engine is not rocket science, you basically unbolt the old and put in the new. Making it sound more complicated only scares people into thinking they can't do it and once your mind is set that way, the battle is already lost. How do you know the person can't do the job until they try. On the other hand, it is good that someone not get over their head, but frankly like I said, they won't know until they try and they will have a better sense of accomplishment when they are done.
