  • push button/kill switch

    hey everyone
i want to install a push button start in my car.
i dont want to have to turn the key
i just want to have a kill switch and push button
like flip the toggle switch and the power would turn on then push the button and vrooom
so could anyone tell me how i would go about doing this?
i was thinking...maybe keep the switch to on position and running the battery on the ignition switch to the toggle
    would this work??

There are some push buttom kits on ebay for cheap with everything you need. I had one on my first festiva and it worked fine. The kill switch is easy, just follow the instuctions for installing the push button start, and you are going to want to wire a toggle switch in between the constant 12v source and the switch I believe. Been a while though.

It's pretty simple. Pull the wiring for the ignition switch, run the wires for the "ON" setting to your toggle switch, run the wires for the "CRANK" setting to a push button. The relays are already in place and the wiring already runs into the dash.

Ox, don't you need a seperate relay though so the new toggle switch doesn't short out?

For safety purposes i would use a relay and fuse...

Just take off the ignition switch assembly, you can leave the actual wiring and switch itself tucked up inside the dash. You just leave the switch in the ON position, and use the kill switch to control power to the relays.

do you have to leave the switch attached or is that just the easiest way?

You'll be able to find a switch that has a *momentary contact* ON in one position, OFF in the other position, with the center position ON. *Momentary contact* - when the toggle lever is placed in a momentary position and then released, the toggle lever automatically returns to a neutral position. I think this is called Toggle Circuit Code 12.
This would give you start in the up position, run in the center position. Off would be in the down position.

Search the web for aircraft electrical supplies. Probably won't be cheap.
Look for aircraft switches. AN3027 - ?? DPDT aka Double Pole Double Throw.

Probably more trouble and expense than it's worth but don't give up on it if that's what you want.

you would need two toggle switches one for run, one for accessory and one heavy duty momentary switch for starter. You don't need relays if you use good switches ,the relays are already there. as for the steering lock just remove the cylinder or leave it turned on and pull out the key.
