  • Timing Advance

I'd like to install my MSD Ignition and coil to the car, but with doing so, I would like to advance my timing. What is everyone on here doing? I've always advanced my timing on my V8 trucks about 6 degrees over stock.

One adjustable cam gear from a DOHC (bp) protege/miata motor will work with a b3/b6/b8 sohc motor.

I'm sorry, I'm not following you here. Your saying I have to swap out my cam gear?

How else would you advance the timing?

not the whole cam just the gear (the timing belt wraps around it) passenger side of engine under plastic cover .. there is one bolt holding it on I believe it takes a 9/16 but I may be wrong-daniel

LOL... wow... I never stay up this late. I completely forgot these match boxes have timing belts, lol. I'm used to V8's man, and simply twisting the distributor.

Ok ok ok... soo can't I just manual loosen it and rotate it? Or skip a few teeth on the belt?

Sounds like we're talking about two different issues here: adjusting ignition timing and valve timing. The original question was about ignition timing. For sure you can do it, just use premium gas to avoid detonation. I'd recommend going up in 2-degree increments; when you hit detonation with premium gas, back off 2 degrees.
