I used the search and browsed through a bunch of different pages and cant really find what I'm looking for. I want to swap the Auto in my 1990 for the four speed in my 1989. Is this a fairly straightforward swap? Any tips/tricks? If someone could point me in the direction of a writeup on the subject it would be much appreciated.

I think I kina have it figured out. Is it basically removing the clutch and brake pedals along with the hinge bolt they pivot on, and the spring for the clutch pedal return and swapping them onto the auto pedal assembly, or is it more involved than that. I took a quick look by flashlight last night and compared the ato to the stick. Something has to be done about the bracket for the clutch cable too right (questionmark, my work laptop does not have a questionmark key)Originally posted by ejp2fast View Postit isn't too bad... any specific questions??1990 Flat black Festiva...Mostly stock...

thats pretty much it... pedals, pivot bolts, springs, and the clutch switch. i had to install mine (but its not hooked up) and acts as a bump stop for the clutch pedal.
Yes, that bracket that holds the clutch cable stationary needs to be addressed... i ended up just wiring mine- keep in mind to remove all sharp edges to the wire doesn't break.. i've had mine break a couple of times.
the prefered option would be to swap out the steering columns though.
BTW- if you did more hwy driving, a 5spd would be more desireable to get those revs down... but i understand if you already have the 4spd ready to drop in.Last edited by ejp2fast; 10-13-2009, 11:00 AM.

I didnt think there was any other option than the five speed. I didnt realize this one was a four speed until I was driving it home and went to shift it into fifth. Oops, no gear. I was pretty dissapointed, but the car gets good enough fuel economy as it is, I just cant stand automatics. Figure the 4 speed has to offer at least slightly better fuel economy than the 3 speed auto. I may look into just swapping the whole column.1990 Flat black Festiva...Mostly stock...

actually, the steering column its self does not need swapped, its the bracket behind the column that has the clutch cable mini-bracket on it...
