  • MSD Coil swap

Ok, so when I bought my car, I was told that it had a new coil. So, I never thought about changing it. Then in another thread, I read that putting in a high performance coil will help when driving up a hill. Well, it didn't seem to help driving up a hill, but it has given it much more pep than I thought it would. Before, I could get up to about 35 MPH at about 3500 RPM in 3rd gear. After installing the msd coil, I can get up to about 50 MPH at about 3500 RPM in 3rd gear! I never would have guessed a b3 with the 4spd would have ran this strong just by changing the coil. It makes me want to get the b6 or b8 swap done now! More power=More FUN! I am very happy with the results I have gotten from a $20 MSD coil from Silv3rBull3t!

You have a model number or anything for the coil? I might look into getting one

All I know about it is what was listed.

      MSD Blaster 2 coil
I didn't notice any numbers on it when installing. I ended up having to use the factory coil bracket because the one that came with it held it weird. I hope this helps. You can check with him and see where he got it and if he has a part # or anything for it.

This may interest you too. Note the part about indexing the plugs and gapping them 10% larger.

Also consider advancing your timing 4 - 6 degrees, and going up one grade of gasoline to compensate for it so there's no detonation.

^^ I keep toying around with that idea, Tom, but mine is running so good at the moment I hate to mess with it. Not sure if I'm going to mess with advancing the timing, but I'm thinking at my next tune up, a high voltage coil, heavier duty wires, and indexed plugs are definitely on the menu.

Go for it! Advance the timing a little too; you'll notice the diff. Unless you just want to keep using the lower-grade gas; it's prolly gonna get a lot more expensive soon; i.e. when the Israelites smite the Persians.

I have no doubt that the new coil helped performance, but this defies the laws of Physics!

Speed and RPM are directly related. It is a function of tire diameter and gear ratio. If 35MPH = 3500RPM then 50MPH (in the same gear) would = 5000RPM and 70MPH would = 7000RPM. See the connection? Twice the MPH, twice the RPM. If you change gears then you are changing the gear ratio, but as long as you stay in the same gear the correlation remains the same.

If you swapped the coil and your Tach actually reads a different RPM than the old coil at any given speed then you have a wiring issue.

I thought the same thing. That is why I was so impressed by it. I am being truly honest. I don't know what the wiring issue would be, because I ran the tach wire myself directly to the coil from the tach. The only thing I messed with was the coil, and I hooked all of the wires back up just how they were on the old one. Any other thoughts on why it may seem like that? I just figured better spark giving it more torque / hp, but I don't know. As far as the timing, I have never messed with anything like that, and I would be afraid of messing something up. I have been told by several people that a minor adjustment there, and you gain more power. I believe that is probably my last option to get it to be "not so doggy" going up a hill. I lost 20 mph AFTER the msd coil install going up a hill! I am just wanting to maintain speed for now until I can get another job and can afford a swap. Thanks everyone.

What coil would you get for the Fuel Injected models? The carb engine use a different style than the FI ones. Would like to replace my FI coil, but not sure which after market, direct replacement coil to buy?? Any suggestion??
