Hey guys, I was studying for my next project when I came across the subject of adapter plates, like for example, to fit a Toyota tranny on a VW engine, and so on. It seem they often go with a 1/4" thickness, with flush mounting screws to hold it to the engine, and new holes for the tranny. But I was wondering, isn't that extra 1/4" spacing bad? Is the tranny imput shaft still gonna go into the flywheel's pilot bearing? Won't it screw up clutch geometry?

Since adaptor plates do work, apparently it isn't a problem. We're only talking 1/4"; I'm sure the input shaft moves a lot more than that, so that it's not an issue.90 Festy (Larry)--B6M (Matt D. modified B6 head), header, 5-speed, Capri XR2 front brakes, many other little mods

To add to that, there's generally more than a 1/4" of play in your pedal adjustment too, so you can set it up to feel exactly the same.-Caleb

Yeah, but if I'm not mistaken, the shaft doesn't move; only the pressure plate and disk slide on the shaft, and the shaft is supposed to rest into the bearing doesn't it?The left lane? I've wondered about this myself... the pilot bearing is only, what, 3/8" thick? So moving it out 1/4" would be significant! Perhaps a spacer can be used between the crank/flywheel as well. That would seat the whole assembly at the right distance, and chances are the flywheel to match whatever trans your using wouldn't bolt to the crank anyway, so it would require an adapter plate of its own.~Nate
